A buddy just text me,said him his wife and kid just got pulled over on the mountain by DWR.Wanted to know if they were horn hunting, said they would have guys on horses patrolling. So till April 1st you can't even take your family for a Sunday drive. I wonder how much that's going to cost taxpayers for the next 6 weeks.Just so someone doesn't pick up a horn. The main reason for this was to protect wildlife. So a bunch of guys on horses that's ok. "Crazy "

I don't know the details about what you're talking about, but I'm glad they're trying to police it. You know what I mean?

So let me get this right. These asshats are worried about some guys walking through the sage brush picking up antlers, but riding horses around "patrolling" is ok?

Perfect. I've got horses. If that's OK to do, Looks like I've got a little "patrolling" for myself to do

They need to be out patrolling. I wish you'd see them out more. If you're doing things legal, they are a welcome sight.

Do people in 4x4s, 4 wheelers and on foot disturb animals? uh, yes they can

Do people on horseback disturb animals much, uh, not really if they are careful

I agree whiskeydog, if your doing nothing wrong, you got nothing to fret. I'm glad to see them out and about keeping an eye on things.

It does get ridickulous. Almost got in trouble just south of Hailey Id. a few years back when I didnt pull into a "mandatory hunter road check" at a rest station. I was on my way TO the mountains and hadnt hunted, so I didnt see a need to pull in. They didnt look at it that way. Borderline harassment.

If you had read the regs , you would know that ALL hunters are required to stop . That is why your user name is EVILNR .

I wish there was twice the enforcement there is now on all wildlife laws.

The animals need all the help they can get this winter. Leave them alone for a few months. It won't kill you, but it might kill them.

So horses are ok ,but Friday there was a DWR truck pulling a side by side with tracks headed to the books so I guess that's alright .That machine shouldn't bother the game either.

Hey I'm sure they are just doing their "counts". If they happen to find an antler or 30 along the way, they are just doing their job?

LAST EDITED ON Feb-12-17 AT 08:25PM (MST)[p]There ain't a Dammed thing they can do,,if you don't pick up a shed or chase a bunch deer around.

There is a million reasons to be out in the hills on public land that have nothing to do with shed hunting. DWR does not have those kind of powers.

I don't horn hunt anymore to big of a shitttt show. But if I want to go looking around maybe hunt a dog or two on BLM I don't want to be hassled every time I go.And I go every Friday.

How dare they put a law in effect to try and save deer and then enforce it, some nerv. You really should go and inadvertently harass as many struggling deer as you can, that will show them overreaching sombithches.

Deerkiller,

You really think that the officers are out there to find a shed or two as part of their job? ridiculous. It is always classic to me how folks who end up getting caught doing something always believe that law enforcement is crooked.

Arns,

That is where you are wrong. I probably not going to convince you are any other folks who believe like you do, but you are very wrong.

Well there are quite a few who have hunting violations on their records, and they are the ones enforcing the laws, so... no I wouldn't be surprised at all if they are out picking up sheds as they are "doing their job"

LAST EDITED ON Feb-13-17 AT 09:18AM (MST)[p]Well , were your buddy and kids out to drive around, hike, take pics, or actually shed hunting under the guise of the former, you didn't tell us all the details. And how are the enforcement officers to determine who's doing what. I'm ALWAYS glad to see them "out there" patrolling. How else are they supposed to catch the lawbreakers?

BS

Hmm. Lets take a poll on which disturbs wildlife more: 2 guys on horses or 100s of people with trucks/ 4 wheelers/ kids/ dogs........

I have lost so much respect for so many people over this closure. If you are posting messages on this or any public forum bitching about the DNR's decision, you are a crybaby. Don't try and church it up and say that it is about this and that; you are selfish, you are a crybaby, and you will be the reason that there is a permanent April 1st opener in Utah.

As said above they worry about people on a sunday drive but they ride around. I understand they are trying to catch people horn hunting early.

So is ok for us to go ride horses around?

Here is my problem with all these restrictions. First horn hunting dates are set. Then turns into no hiking or riding horses. Then horn hunting dates will be june or even into july. Then turns into no horn hunting. Then charging to access public land and finally all our rights are stripped.

Every year more restrictions come into place and someday it will be to where we have no rights.

I have never seen horn hunters chasing game in our area. The elk could care less we are even around. What bugs me is I have watched game and fish chase elk all day with a helicopter pushing elk from private ranches to public land. The elk would just keep turning back to the ranch for their feed grounds. To me that's more stress than a horn hunter could ever do. This was in late april. Think of all the pregnant cows that got stressed or even a calf being aborted.

So in conclusion im not throwing a fit or disagreeing with the rules but more worried about what we will see in the next few years.

Perfectly harmless situation "arns". Officers of the law should be out patrolling wherever they are assigned to, in whatever capacity they are supposed to. They are trained to strike up conversations with individuals they encounter, and, frequently, engage them in discussions.

5 years ago, I met two DWR officers in the Book Cliffs. They waved at us to stop. We shot the breeze with them for 20-30 minutes. Shared photos of deer we had been seeing, and they even shared some hidey holes to try. T\In the course of our discussion, they mentioned some illicit activity that had been reported. Asked if we knew about it. Or even if we had anything to do with it. It was part of their job. A job WE PAY THEM TO DO.

Lay off the enforcers. And obey the law. :)

"Therefore, wo be unto him that is at ease in Zion!" 2 Ne. 28: 24

I agree they have a job to do. They get a rep to where most hate them due to they punish someone for breaking the law and word gets around to where they screwed someone, which turns into people hating them for punishing a criminal. So they have to deal with some idiots. I respect them in that field cause most of us couldn't do it. Just like cops or any field. They have to deal with some nasty stuff and to able to go home and sleep at night must be tough after the stuff they see. They are just regular people trying to bring home a check like us. There is good guys and bad guys in every work field. Even fire fighters have hero's to and that's lineman that work sometimes work 30 hours straight in a very dangerous field. every line of work in this country keeps this country turning.

I realize this may be complicated to some.
Let me try again. Just because I have a hunting
license in my wallet doesnt mean I am hunting,
have hunted or am going hunting. I could be
going to visit my grandmother, fishing, or just
headed to town to get some groceries. Also, they
ASSUMED I was a hunter. Are they making everyone
pull over? I doubt it, esp. if I was driving a Subaru
or Range Rover.

They pull over a couple "Sunday" drivers and tell them they are looking for shed hunters.

Next thing you know, them "Sunday" drivers tell their friends, who tell their friends, who post on the internet, and then everyone knows.

Sounds like a good job to me........

I couldn't agree with you more they have a tough job to do.But all i ask is be civil about it.So i will give you 2 examples of good and bad.Last year a friend of mines son had deer tag and we get pulled over so i get out of my side by side he walks up and asks how we're doing and if we were hunting. So i told him the story and he was real nice, even told us we're he'd seen a couple of nice bucks. Then he said I don't see any off road sticker and I told him it was street legal and he checked. After that we talked for a while i even showed him some pic.He was a great guy. Next example. 2 days later get pulled over again I get out and this guy comes right up to me and gets in my bubble checking to see if I'd been drinking. Grant this is 9am walk over sticks his head in the side by side then check the cooler in the back make me honk my horn checks my turn signals.Walks over to his truck tells us see you later and leaves.Like you said we have good and bad I know they have a job too do just like you and I.All i asking is to be treated with a little dignity and respect like we are suppose to treat them.

That's right it's all about me me me.I don't care about the snow flake that gets a ticket for not detaching his tag or the guy who gets a ticket for a 6 month old beer can in the back of his truck.I don't care if they check me every day during hunting season. But this time of year I don't need to be checked. No dog box in the back, unless there worried about to many cottontails

I hope these permits would cost $100+, and for one reason only. It would weed out all the "cool kids" and trend "followers"

Really! I don't see the bad experience here. He checked for alcohol! How dare he! Come on! The only people that get pulled over and complain are those that have at one point, broken the law.
