So after attending the expo this weekend, and seeing what all the auction tags went for and seeing all the people applying for the expo tags, I got to thinking. Why is it that for the expo tag drawing, utah is the only state to "donate" our tags to the drawing? Why doesn't Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Washington, Oregon and California donate tags from their public drawings? As I understand it, or atleast the lie we are told to believe, the money generated from the expo for conservation projects doesn't just stay in Utah. It goes all over the place to help with wildlife projects and habitat. I see that governor tags from other states get auctioned off at this expo, so why shouldn't the other states throw in some of their public tags to this drawing all in the name of "conservation"? We give away some pretty awesome tags, at the expense of the residents that live here and because of that our draw odds become worse than they were to begin with (yes even 1 tag is a big deal in the public draws as far as odds go), I think the other states should do the same. Or is utah the only state that will proudly pimp out their animals?

Well....as far as I know, or knew...the tags that they draw at the expo were 200 tags taken from the non resident pools.

They weren't resident tags. Not that that makes any difference for anything other than, facts matter.

So....in essence, the non residents that apply in the regular draw could theroretically have a bigger gripe than a resident since 1 tag being taken from their pool really is a big deal.

But there again, I believe the amount of non resident tags for any given unit and species is 10% of how many resident tags are.

Unless that's changed too.

If they were really taken from the non-resident pool, then you could add all those tags back in, unit-by-unit, and still have non-residents taking less than the maximum of 10% of those tags per unit, per species.

Anybody care to verify?

I think what ridetops and vanilla are trying to say is...

The answer would need to be verified, Justified, and legislated through the appeals court to be "correct".

Unless it was stated on Facebook, then it must be true!

The change made back in 2008 allowing NR to apply for all 5 OIL species was not a good thing for NR. Rather, it was a serious blow to draw odds for any NR trying to draw a specific OIL species. It was really IN NO WAY a good thing for NR's. But it was done for a reason....to provide some solace to NR's for the concurrent change that would require the purchase of a NR hunting license to apply. So those NR's could then say..."well they're making us buy a license, but now we can apply for all 5 OIL species". Duh!!

NR draw odds for OIL species of course jumped by a factor of roughly 5X the next year. Remember that for NR, most all of the OIL tags go to the random draw, not the bonus. This includes ALL desert sheep tags, ALL bighorn sheep tags, all but one Moose tag, 8 out of 10 Mt Goat tags, and 8 out of 10 Bison tags. So yes, if you wanted 5 times as many applicants in your draw pool, then yes, the change was good.

The point that folks could build points then move to Utah seems moot. Because points will stop building for all but one OIL species as soon as the guy moves to Utah. Maybe in 50-60 years from now, having built points for all OIL's and then moving to Utah might help someone get a tag in the bonus draw. But for most anyone alive today it's of no real benefit. But I'd be fine with a rule requiring anyone moving to Utah with points to pick one OIL species and throw away all points for the 4 others.

I bring this up not to carp about the system in any way. I'm highly grateful for the chance to apply as a NR. Just pointing out that this was not a favor given to NR's by the UDWR.

So true Stick these NRs think there getting a bonus by being able to put in for ALL the hunts. Every NR does the same hunts draw odds go down and DWR get more app fees.

I think your idea is great! I'd gladly throw in for a chance at some out of Utah tags at the expo.
