I came across a pretty good deal on a barely used UTV. Some of the newer ones have power steering but this one does not. So for you guys running them what are your thoughts on the PS is it a must have ?
Thanks

I have the Honda pioneer. It does not have power steering. I have never had any issues not having it, although I've never driven one with it and I'm sure it is nice.

I've owned several and the Pioneer is the best in my opinion. Don't believe I would worry about the PS. Transmission in Honda is second to none and personally more importantl

Depends on which model you have, in the Polaris Ranger it makes a huge difference, might not be as big of a deal in the smaller UTV's.

I have always had a side x side with power steering. But I guess you just deal with it and get the machine if it's what you want. Truck are so expensive these days. It's nice to leave your truck at the dirt road and jump on your side x side. Take it for a test drive before you buy.

When riding on a gravel or good dirt road, you won't miss it. The difference though is night and day when your in 4wd crawling around rocks or stumps. Anytime your going slow in 4wd, keep your thumbs out of the steering wheel because it will spin hard if you hit anything with a front tire, and rip your thumb back around your wrist. I've done that a couple times. It hurts.

I have a Yamaha Viking and, at the time, the EPS was an additional $1,000. I drove both (with and without) and all I can say is that I didn't feel it was worth $1,000 and, almost 3000 miles later, I don't miss it. Having said that....it might be worth $500 more LOL!

I've had 2 honda 4 wheelers and 1 Yamaha rino with out PS and now I have a Honda 4 wheeler and a Canam commander with PS and differences is night and day. I will have PS in every thing I own or buy

Well it's a 2015 with only 260 hours on it in very good condition he wants $9000 or best offer. A new one with power steering will be about $5000 more here in California with all the taxes. I may be able to live without the power steering for that kind of savings.

Like one of the guys said if you're on dirt roads and going 10 to 30 mph you will be fine with out PS.But if you're in rough conditions with a lot of big rocks you will need PS or you will get your arms jerked off. I would go to a dealership and test drive both and then make your mind up.If your going to save 5 grand i would buy it.Then put PS on later if you decided to.

If the price is right, jump on it . Lots of aftermarket power steering kits available if you decide you want it . I have a viking without PS and it works fine for me.

PS is great, But you can add it to a lot of UTV with after market kits.

I have a Pioneer 500 and don't miss PS. That said you can buy the kit for about $600. Buy it, try it, decide.

The best side by side that you can ever have is the one that you were born with. They are called legs, and they are side by side. They get you to places where no motor will ever get. They go forever on a tank of gas. There are no electronics to fry. Just my opinion.

Yes this is so true! But as I get older there are fewer miles left on my Knees .So when your walking down that ten mile long wash board road. Don't get pissed off when I pass you doing fifty miles per hour. My truck gets beat to crap going down them at twenty five. So I would rather drive to the trail head on my Atv/Utv and then hike.

Power steering is awesome with how heavy these machines are I would never go back. My first rzr (pos) by the way. did not have it and it wasn't horrible at the time. But now that I own my teryx no way would I ever consider going back to not having it

I had a Pioneer 700 before I sold it to get the 1000. Did not have a problem with not having power steering. But without low range in the transmission it never had enough power for hunting and steep trials.

65X47 could you tell me a little more about the lack of power. How many guys and gear did you have in it ? How steep where the hills ?
Obviously the 1000 would have more power but I never heard anyone say the 700 couldn't make it up steep hills adequately.

There were steep places or ruff places going slow where it just did not have the power. Had the gas to the floor and would bearlly keep going with only 2 persons. 95% of the time it worked just fine. I think if the 700 would have had a low range I would have keep it, that was the only down side.

Ok that doesn't sound good but thanks for the reply.
Anymore feed back from the others who have the 700 would be appreciated.

I bought a Pioneer 700 when they first came out, this one didn't have the flip up seat option in the back--with 2 220+ pound guys and pushing 27" Bighorns I never had a problem going up any hill--keep the air filter clean and you'll never power out. I ended up selling it and buying a brand new 700 with the flip up seats a year or so later--I set it up the same with 27" bighorns, etc. Last year on the elk hunt we had it loaded with 4 big guys, cooler, packs, guns, etc... and it did power out going up one incredibly steep, rocky hill. So yes, they definitely could use a low gear range, but I have a hunch that I would've burned up a belt in this same situation with any other SxS. the 2 guys in the back just got out and I made it up the hill just fine. I've had them all and the Honda has been by far the best. Just wish I would've known about the 1000 that came out just a few months after I bought my 700... Oh well! Also, I have a 72" plow on this machine and it pushes snow like crazy. I've never had a problem with either of my 700's, can't say the same about the rhino's I had in the past!

Does anyone have the Pioneer 500? I have been thinking about selling my two ATV's and getting one.

Any of the side by sides are fine if you are moving, going slow or nearly stopped over rough country that power steering is nice. You can break or puncture a tire side wall a lot easier with power steering in rough terrain.

I had one it is a plain Jane machine I traded up to teryx 4 not soon after I love that machine. I will keep it for life

I don't have PS in my Ranger and a few times, in real rocky stuff I thought, "I wonder how PS would work right now?"

But got through it without PS with no issues.

And you know the rocky country I hunt.

Over 5 mph, not an issue without it.

Follow snowmobiles, dirt trails or street legal ! They are new Jeep ! Power steering does help turning those big snow tracks .

Well while trying to decide if the used one was exactly what I wanted it sold.
I wasn't to upset so I went and looked at all the brands and did some more research.

So last week I pulled the trigger on a new Honda pioneer 700 Deluxe in camo. It has the power steering and paddle shifters so you can run it in auto or manual. I can't wait to take it up to the mountains.
I had them install a winch but I still need to get the wind shield and roof.
What's your guys opinion on type roof Hard or Bimini top ?

I tried posting a few pictures but it wasn't working.

Hunter I can't wait to take it up there this year it's going to be so nice to fit both dog crates in the back.

Where did you get those doors for that rzr?

WIndshield. I wasn't sold either, but then spend Memorial weekend a few years back having it rain the entire weekend. I had a cloth top, which kept me from being poured on, but having int pour into my face for 3 days blew.

So when I bought my viking last year, windshield was a buying point. On that machine, late in the year, with a little heat from the motor, and the wind not blowing on your face, or more important your hands, it not bad at all in Nov.

PS is absolutely worth the price in my opinion. I would also go with a hard top, and a glass windshield, not plexi.
Had a 2012 Ranger 800 with 14,500 miles that I sold last year and updated to a 2015 900 that I've got 4000 miles on now. I had a deposit on a new pioneer 1000 when I traded, but got tired of waiting for them to get to the dealer and pulled the trigger on the new ranger. I put more miles on my machines than most, and a lot of those miles are loaded down with gear, dead animals or dogs. In my opinion Maxxis Bighorn tires and a winch are also a must.

264 the doors are Polaris. The bottoms are added. We also have a cab encloser on the top of the doors.
Oilcan I like a real glass windshield, but with a vent on the bottom. So i can open it and blow dust threw the cab. Also a hard roof. Metal not plastic on our old machine, the ABS plastic roof started to rip off. Enjoy your new ride !
