LAST EDITED ON Mar-06-17 AT 03:57PM (MST)[p]Here is an interesting tent auction, if anyone is interested, maybe a group of us should get together and put a bid in for these, and each take one, (or more).

If your interested let me know on here and then we'll PM each other, to work out the details, if enough of us are interested.

The current bid is $760, for all fourteen tents.

http://www.publicsurplus.com/sms/auction/view?auc=1803264

I've bought and sold on this Surplus Auction, it's safe and secure. A number of Utah School Districts sell their obsolete and surplus equipment through here, as well as many other government agencies across the county.

The auction is open for 4 more days. Tents are stored in Tumwater, WA 98501, all fourteen including the aluminum poles and the canvas are estimated at 6000 pounds and the buyer must pick them up, in person, Pick Up Deadline: 3:00 PM Saturday March 18th, 2017.

It would be good if someone from Washington State was interested and we could arrange for them to do the pick up of us, however, if we can get a good enough deal, I maybe willing to haul my trailer over and pick them up, I could drop off to the rest of you, as I come back to Central Utah.

Dang. Iwas interested until I read the 540 pounds. Can that be right? I've got several wall tents including a couple 16x16s that with poles might weigh 140"s. ?????

I'm in, but I only want one. I will keep tabs if this gains traction. I live in La Grande Oregon and it might work out for me to make the run from here.

YBO, ya, something might be off a few pounds but not a lot I suspect. It says they total 6000 llbs. But.......if we do 540 x 14 that equals 7,560 lbs. So one or the other other can't be exact. Still very heavy, averages just under a pound per square foot. Some of the weight will be in that heavy duty frame I would think. There is a pdf Manual at the bottom of the page that you can download and read as per installation instructions. Pretty complete instructions it looks like.

DZ, I'll make you down for one. If we can 9 or 10 others I think maybe we can make it work. I've got family that would take a coupe or three.

bc. this may be an up grade from what you camp it! :D

DC

Have you decided on what your max bid would be? = to how much a piece? And it might be a good idea to only sell like 10 and hold a couple back till everyone is happy with the one they get. Then we could sell the extra ones, did I say we, I meant you. :)

DZ

DZ, that is what I was thinking as well, I figured there may be parts and pieces missing too, so going for 10 or 11 would be allow everyone to get a complete set up and then we/I can see what we have let to work with.

Regarding the max. bid. That would be up to the group, if we get one put together. I'm pretty stingy so I wouldn't get carried away. And........ I'm not much of a risk taker, so I'm interested but only if we can do it on the cheap! :)

Your welcome faultcurrent, glad we could help out.

DC

DW, have you ever set one like this up? Can two guys do it, or does it take a helicopter and a team of mules? :D

LAST EDITED ON Mar-06-17 AT 07:58PM (MST)[p]Hey deadi, how about some come-a-longs, a HiLift Jack, chain saw, 9 pound hammer, a bloc an tackle, 50 yards of rope and four 8' diameter pine trees? You're packing enough stuff around in your pic-up to defeat an army! ;-)

Setting up a tent like this, solo, would be no problem for most of the ole boys around these parts. They's resourceful, don't you know?

DC

I see a note saying they can extend the auction. Guess they got a minimum they need.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-07-17 AT 01:10PM (MST)[p]Yea, that's kind of standard procedure for a lot of these items, it allows the bidding to continue, if at the end of the designated time, there are two or more bidders going at it hard. I think it keeps people from holding off until there are 2 seconds left and dropping a higher bid on, to keep someone else from coming back with a higher bid, because the time has expired, If that makes since. Also, if the seller wants to hold it back and redo that auction, hoping to get more next time. I just play the game and what ever happen happens.

Most of the time, when I buy something on this auction site, I get it really cheap or I don't want it. Of course, if I really want it, I'll stay in until I win or the price gets beyond my need for the item. :)

I don't see much interest in the MM folks on doing a group bid on these tents, and that's cool, I just figured I'd post it in case there were some that wanted a really big wall tent. I've got what I need, so far as wall tents are concerned, but for cheap, I'd throw one of these up and leave it up all summer and fall, on some private mountain property I have access too. Thought maybe some others might want to do something similar. I'm good either way. :)

I bet you do troll boy. just another useless post on your part that nobody cares about. stroker

Thanks for posting this DC. It is interesting.

I checked the Technical Manual (TM 10-8340-240-12&P). It says the Medium sized tent weighs 795 lbs. and should take 4 people 36 minutes to set up. (I'm thinking 4 highly trained combat engineers, with a first lieutenant watching :))

I expect a Mexican drug cartel to secure the winning bid.

There were army tents for sale at the preppercon last year. If I recall they were several grand each. Alter the entrance and you have a removable car garage or paint spray booth.

There are as many uses as there are imaginations. eel shared another! :)

I would guess they are made out of pretty durable, heavy duty materials.

But........ if you have no use for one....... Oh well.

DC

I figured I'd share a little info since it doesn't look like anyone has ever used these. I've set these tents up plenty of times and with 2 people you'd have your hands full plus if you only have 2 guys in camp this is way more tent than you need. I've slept in these with over 20 guys. As far as weight what they have listed is probably pretty close with all the poles and everything.

Slept in those with 20 guys? You and accumark having a sausage party?

Yes they are military tents and you're not always afforded the best accommodations but you make it work with what you have.

Yes, thank you Corey.

Those are pretty serious tents and like 2lumpy said, if you had a place to set one up for the summer with lots of people coming.

My Dad was an engineer in WWII and he went to England prior to D-Day and one of the jobs they did was to set up tent cities for all the US troops who would soon arrive. So he could probably figure one out. :)

I'm in for 1 Lumpy... I'd gladly pay 1/14th the bid price as long as it doesn't go over a reasonable price.. I'm local in SL County..

Rink

Sounds good Rink, I've got you down for one. If we get more folks, we'll PM prices. Two days left on the auction.

DC

You're in huntingjic. Five miles is nearly next door in this part of the world! Maybe we can do a "tent city". Have you been around any of these military tents, in your past?

DC

The bid went up $20.00 I might be good for two or three if the price doesn't jump way up. Wondering how hard it would be to make two 16x16 tents out of them. I'm thinking a bit of welding and sowing a guy could do it. What do you guys think?

DZ

I wouldn't even consider it but that's just me dz. There is enough canvas for one 16 x 32, so if you cut it half, where would the material come from to cover the two ends? I don't weld and you'd need a "he man" machine to sew that fabric. But........ to each his own I guess ;-)

DC

Tent bid has increased to $1,425.00. If we figure about $600 to haul them from Tumwater, we going to be over $200 per tent, and that's if the bid price doesn't go up anymore.

Personally, if the price jumps much more I won't be interested in entering a bid.

DC

FYI

me personally,I'm willing to go as high as $350 per. tent. but, that's just my .02 cents

LAST EDITED ON Mar-09-17 AT 06:16PM (MST)[p]Had to put up dozens of these tents at a time in my younger years as a US Marine. Also built a lot of 2x4 framework for them so you didnt need the poles. No way I want one of them.

That's really good information Fx4. It's alway good to get information from someone that has first hand experience!

DC

Did you get enough sold to make a bid? If we figure $600 to get them and do $200 a tent. If you do figure on 11 tents then that would cover up to a $1600 bid. I would only like one at this price.

DZ

LAST EDITED ON Mar-10-17 AT 09:43PM (MST)[p]Ya dz about 5:30! It took off and jumped to $2257.00 and I figured it was going to go for too miuch.

Thanks everyone for your interest, maybe next time.
