How many points do you have?

Now that we are most of the way through the application season I noticed that my family (three sons and myself) is likely on track to break 1,000 preference points this year!!
I have a spread sheet that tracks 176 applications in 8 different states that I put us in for (two of those states ID and NM don't have point system). We are currently sitting on 964 total points. Alone I have 332 points and I'm 52 years old. I wonder how many points will go unused by the time I am too old to hunt? This got me wondering how this compares with others out there.

How many applications do you submit each year?
How many points do you have collectively?

That's incredible. I can't imagine the time and effort it takes to manage all of those applications.

As for me, I only have time in my schedule for 2-3 hunts every year so what I don't draw in NM I look to OTC options out of state. One exception, I just burned the one point I had for my CO deer tag.

Kudos to you all, I don't know how you do that.

Hunt Hard. Shoot Straight. Kill Clean. Apologize to No One.

I have 154 and cashed 11 elk and 7 deer pts in Colorado this year. I'm 37 years old and apply for 50+ hunts a year...

I love to hunt and therefore try not to build points if at all possible. IMO no sense in sitting on the sidelines building points when there are hunts to be had with fewer points if someone is willing to use a bow or muzzleloader. At the end of the day you can't eat or mount bonus/preference points but to each their own I guess.

So where are you getting your low point sheep, moose, ibex, mountain goat, etc tags that you just need to "scout"

I have a few in a couple three states. But the 21 for deer in Utah is always on my mind. MD great post. ;) In Oregon if you don't have points you don't hunt, at least for us guys that tend to stay away from the stick and string. Being from Idaho I have not enjoyed the point deal at all. I haven't went after the Big OIL hunts, mostly because of the cost. No way to justify that kind of cost per pound for me. SD what kinda dollars do you have attached to 1000 points? It might be a page or two down in the spread sheet so it isn't public knowledge, but I bet you have a column for it. I do have to say that I am a bit jealous of the fun that is in front of you and your boys.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-03-17 AT 11:56PM (MST)[p]Off the top of my head, without a spreadsheet this is where I'm at:

UTAH
elk-11
Moose-10
Antelope-9
Desert sheep-9
Rocky Bighorn-9
Deer-9
General deer-7

NEVADA
Desert sheep-11
Calif sheep-11
Elk 1
Deer 2
Antelope 3

ARIZONA
elk-3
Antelope-2

COLORADO
elk-5
Deer-10

CALIFORNIA
Deer-2
Antelope-10
Elk-11
Sheep-10

OREGON
Deer-12
Antelope-12
Elk-10

So I have about 175 PPs. My wife has about 15-20 more and in better shape than me in Utah and Nevada.

Although still waiting on Kali and ID, we are about 0-88 so far this year.

I have a spot in Colorado we ALWAYS fill all of our elk tags but since my son and wife have already taken numerous bulls there, building points for higher quality tags.

So SDBugler. How many points do u have in SD for elk. At 40 I have 19 for H2 and 24 for CSP. Hope one of these years to draw H2 but I'm afraid that I will never be lucky enough for CSP

Funny people without points say they would rather hunt everyyear..most of us hunt tons of OTC hunts in multiple states waiting for the special draws..you can and should do both...with that said, after 27 years of points in all western states, and some super tags, I'm getting a little tired of the game..planning on retirement and a fixed income, gonna end up eating some points..oh well, whitetail does here I come! BH1

I'm not yet 60 and I have north of 600, combine my 3-sons and it is in the 1,000 range. Trapped just have to keep playing the game.

I have 182 points in the western states. Yes, I've drawn a few really good tags that have taken my points to zero, obviously, but I'm having a hard time seeing how anyone can be over 300 points, at least if just focused on the western states. I realize there are places like Maine where points do not equate to years applied, etc.

The point game is quite a racket, and while I stand to draw some really good tags in the coming years, I would throw them all away to get back to random draw everywhere. Thank God for the few hold out states like ID.

The only points I have is for UT for moose which is 4, and 3 MTN Goat points for my home state of Washington, grew up pretty local to the goat rocks, so a dream hunt.

Do not plan on building any other points for where I currently live and or anywhere else unless it takes 0-1 point, I bow hunt, so shouldn't be too hard to draw most tags, but never know.

Grew up in WA state bought all tags OTC never put in for tags there, not a fan of the system, so OTC will be it as long as I'm alive.

I've lost a lot of interest in hunting since I've been to UT, to ever draw a general season deer tag you have to draw here.

I was reading an article here a few weeks ago where there's a lot of lost interest by a certain amount of people each year, I'm a firm believer in all these states going to draws, an/or point systems where it takes years to draw. Never tried the random states like NM or ID, but it's all OTC for me, and rather take the challenge get away from the people and hit the backcountry.

To each there own.

What have we really become.?
