First post here, just drew my tag for y today I've hunted there 4 times since 08 always hunt around kaycee to the south wondering how the hunting is up north if it's worth going up into the mountains or if it's just going to be worse than the hunting in the kaycee area. I am from Michigan so no way to scout and we are trying to do this on public land would possibly look at a lease

Haven't hunted there, but lots of research in that area has told me that you are best staying south.
To find more deer habitat you would need to go into region C up along the powder river.
They tell me there is good population of deer throughout your area.
Just not great trophy potential.

Don't be fooled by the member saying to stay south. There are good numbers of deer up north, but it's different heavier timbered habitat for the most part that is thought of as more of an elk and moose area. My best buddy lives in Sheridan and we go up in there from time to time just to mess around, since we hunt on the west side of the mountains every year. I'd say give it an honest try and do something different than hunting in the more open areas down around Kaycee.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-24-17 AT 08:17AM (MST)[p]That's what I am looking to hear, I have done all the research online and all anybody has to say is there's better numbers around kaycee and while there is deer there it's hard to find a buck worth shooting the second year I was there the only buck I saw was a small forkhorn. I could care less if I see a bunch of deer just looking to see a little better quality. Being from Michigan all I hunt here is swamps and woods so shouldn't be to big of an adjustment still early in the planning but sounds like we are going to try and get a motel farther up north for a couple days then head to kaycee if hunting up north doesn't pan out

Sounds like I stand corrected.
Not trying to lead anyone stray, just trying to help.
Sounds like your getting advice from guys that hunt there.
Wish I got advice similar about the area when I was doing research.

Didn't apply there.

Very thankful for any responses I've looked around online for info and pretty much everything I can find has to do with the south part of the unit
