I love my app when it works, but their customer service is incredibly bad. I have called 3 times and been on hold for FOREVER and still did not talk to anyone. My app wont let me reset my password and says it does not recognize my email... Perfect timing as I am loading up to go scouting tonight....

I have paid to update my card twice now and it hasn't worked once. I think it was 30 bucks each time. I have tried to call no answer. It just says to send them a email. The email says the same thing as there web site. I worked when I first got the card. But I am ready to try a different company. Any companies that do the same thing and take care of their customers?

LAST EDITED ON Jun-23-17 AT 00:46AM (MST)[p]Well I was just going to buy something along these lines.

Is this thread some kind of omen?

What else is out there?

Tell us what you find out please...I bought the Colo CHIP two years ago. 100$ Put it in a garmin 64st..I walked right to a brass cap on a funky fence line. It has and is working perfectly. That said I am afraid to do any "upgrades" as every one I know has had problems..There are ownership changes I would like to have a feature I paid for and I am afraid to use...I have seen discrepancies between the phone app and my gps..?? Try telling a kid in their 20's that their phone is wrong..Any way please share your experience with any other companies...I still believe the chip or app is MANDATORY when exploring new country..It has helped me on areas I have hunted
For years...and yes I was trespassing for 25+ years..my best coyote stand is off limits...

onX Maps is decent but way too pricey. Download the Avenza PDF maps app on to your cellular device and add unit-level maps of public/private + 7.5 USGS quads for anywhere from 99 cents to $5/county. Pair w/ a 10000 mah power bank if you're staying in the backcountry for an extended period of time. Also, make sure to turn your cell signal off to save battery. If you have any questions about certain boundaries, do your homework ahead of time w/ the county auditor's website to check tract boundary lines/ownership.

I bought the Wyoming chip and then paid for an upgrade to do it right online when they also started putting the landowner names on it. It wouldn't do the upgrade online and when I called the guy apologized and said to just send them my chip and they would send me a new upgraded one, which they promptly did. It sounds like maybe they've grown so much that they don't have the staff to handle things properly like they did when they started out.

Coyote_Chaser -- I work with the guys over at OnXMaps and they're customer service has always been good. Shoot me your contact info and I can make sure someone gets ahold of you.

I've used their chips for about 8 years and have always been well taken care of. If you want to update your chips, you can send yours in and they'll send you an updated one.

So far I have had good luck with onx. I have been using them for the last two years on my phone. I have had two issues and emailed them twice and received a pretty fast response. I like using it on my phone because the maps will automatically update for you. I don't have to worry about using a computer and updating them every time.

We apologize for any inconvenience. It looks like you may have called in at a time where phone support was temporarily unavailable.
We are available Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm (MST).
In rare occasions, if you are not able to reach us, we may be in training. You can call us at 406-540-1600 or email us at [email protected] and we will help you out.
Again, sorry for any inconveniences, I hope you had a good scouting trip and we look forward to resolving any issues you might have.

ONX MAPS! SUCKS! Dude I called last year, you guys ripped me off, my app would not work until 2 or 3 days after my hunt ended I purchased the app months before, it was a good 3 months your app would not work. I called I sent emails I did about everything I could think of then after my hunt you guys rubbed salt in the wound and got the block off my app. I think I would get at least something for my troubles, if you guys are too big then hire more people. I mean this is a joke, and I will not be using your services again unless you make this right. You would have ruined my hunt had I not known to contact the county recorders office and forrest service for boundary information and so on, which is why I paid you $30 for the service to work, not to have a app I could not use!

I use mine on my i6 and iPad for quite a few years now.

I just re-upped for another year for $20.00 as they had a Fathers Day 30% off.

No issue's ever for me.....

I am content

I have only been using their service for about 2 years now. The only issue I have had is managing the settings for the layers. Tons of options that were a bit daunting to navigate for someone like me. In the end, I FREAKIN' LOVE THIS SERVICE!!
I use it on my iPhone and my only complaint has been how steep the learning curve has been for me.
I would recommend more online tutorials and maybe a few live Facebook (Or Monster Muleys) Q&A sessions. (aka, John Dudley podcasts)

Sounds like everyone including me who uses the app on their phone has had the best luck. Maybe give the phone app a try and see of it works better. A huge advantage of using your phone is you never need to update the maps. Your phone does it for you.

If you are looking into something else, I have used Gaia GPS through my iPhone and have never had a problem with it.

I think it may be the luck of the draw. I have used the detailed landowner chip ones for Utah, Idaho and Wyoming and upgraded two of the three when the upgrade was available with no problem. I run them in the Garmin 64S.

Speaking of onX maps, how reliable would you say their spring/wanted indicators are? In some places I know it says there's springs and I can confirm that. In other areas I know there are springs, it doesn't indicate there being water at all. And in other areas I've never been in, it says there are springs. I plan on checking them out, but some of them are pretty remote and would kind of atleast have a good idea if there really is in fact water there. Any experience on this?

Depends on where u are looking. In the desert they are hit and miss because, well it's a desert and they dry up. For the most part they have been correct for me though. There is several springs that I have marked on my maps and when o scouted I found almost all of them have water. Along with looking for springs I also switch my basemap to the one where it shows water really well. Not sure what it's called off the top of my head but I have had good luck with it. Sometimes is merely where snow melt has created a small pond over time and fills up yearly. Most of them are hard to get to and not wrll known. Just the way I like it

Maybe it's just where I am, but USGS quads are free. So are GeoPDFs, which have better topography but less other stuff. I've downloaded both for most areas I'm scouting.

The last 3 years I used the OnXMap on my I phone. Problem is when I get into the field to hunt I get No cell service. I bought a Garmin ST and the $99 OnX Chip and should be set.....

Wibuckslayer23 you know the app is designed to work without cell service correct? If you save your maps for offline use the app can be used just as normal without having any cell service at all.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-05-17 AT 08:29PM (MST)[p]I use BackCountry Navigator for $10 and each state is $10. I can download topos, aerial photos, aerial photos overlaid with topos ($10 extra) as well as sailing charts (used in Alaska) I am so use to it, that I haven't switched to onXmaps yet, though have tried the trial version which seemed very nice.

BackCountry Navigator only works on Android phones, not on Iphones, unless they have changed something in the last year. For $20 you can get one state and try it out, much cheaper than onXmaps.

You should be able to use Google Earth as well as you can cache up to 2GB of aerial photos, you just need to remember to look at the area you are going to be hunting while you have internet service (wish they would allow you to download certain areas). If you have the KMZ file for landownership for your state (usually free or $10) downloaded on your phone, it should work very cheaply!
