LAST EDITED ON Aug-13-17 AT 09:43PM (MST)[p]my wife drew a book cliffs archery deer tag this year and i was way exited about it. but after 6 scouting trips i have come to the reality that a big buck on the unit is a 160" buck. my ? is. is this what i should expect of the unit for a top end buck? i have no problem with her chasing 150+ bucks with a bow and would think it was great but is this a top end buck for the unit?

Its not the top end, but it is the majority of what you will find.

thanks for the replies bess and jake h i was just expecting more for the the unit but if that is a top end deer we will have fun chasing them . thanks

Bookcliffs deer is a fun unit where you see a ton of deer. Lots of 4 points and managed for about 160" deer. This is no secret. There are bigger taken off every year. And smaller but that is where you are at.

Hey sh!

Being in the Right Spot at the Right Time/AKA being Lucky is how most of the Better Bucks are taken in the Books!

Get back off the roads. People seem to see a lot of "nice" bucks so they keep looking where they are seeing a lot. If you put in some work and get away from the crowds you can find better bucks. Couple buddies had archery tags last year and killed 197" and 210" bucks. Another one has the tag this year and he's targeting a few bucks 190 to 215. So yes there are some big top end bucks but you'll have to work for them.

Much of what has been said here already is true. Because of the number of tags and deer migration, it is rare for a giant to be found, let alone harvested off the Books these days.

There are very few bucks larger than 160" killed each year, and from my experience and what I saw going out in trucks last year, a lot of smaller ones than that.

I took a 26.5" 4x4 that scored exactly 160 0/8" on the rifle hunt last year. I had only seen 3 bucks that were better scoring during archery and muzzleloader, but my buck was symmetrical and my widest buck to date. I couldn't lay off the trigger.

You will probably have the most fun you've ever had on an archery hunt out there. You will see more bucks than you can count. And she will get to chase/stalk as many bucks as she can handle.

180" plus bucks are very rare. While you can get "away from roads", the deer and bucks move all over that country. Had some friends hunt a full week of the archery hunt in the Roadless in 2014, they hiked and camped in there away from everybody. They never saw anything better than a 140" buck. Came out and killed two 155-165" bucks 4x4s in two days just glassin from the Divide Road.

It's not the Paunsy or the Henry's, but she will have chances at a lot of decent deer. I would recommend you stalking bucks that have some age, even if you don't intend to kill them, just for practice. Then if you do have that once-in-a-lifetime chance, she'll be ready...

Keep us updated..!!
