Arizona/New Mexico

The post before on random draw tags got me thinking. I am 37 and have been putting in for Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and Nevada and Idaho. At 37 is it worth adding in Arizona or New Mexico to the list. The plan is to do an out of state hunt of two every year which will put me looking to draw units in the 4-7 point range and rotating between state. I can use Idaho and Colorado as states when I don't get a tag in the draw. Wondering if its of any value to add the other two states into the mix of the 4-6 point range. My plan is with the correct scouting and a little luck I will be in quality and possibly trophy animals every year from here on out. Not sure if there is much in either state in the 4-7 point range. I am hunt all weapons

Anyways that's the plan. Excited to get everything started this year with Idaho mule deer. My 10 year old son and dad will be making the trip. Time to build memories

Thanks

Yes, for elk Arizona can be drawn with 5 points and most of the units are awesome to hunt. Start now you wont regret it.

New Mexico has no points it is a true lottery every year. Do some research and pick some hunts.

Good luck.

Depends a lot on what species you're talking about. I assume you probably mean deer & elk. Unfortunately, the average non-resident starting today will not be able to draw any of the high-demand elk tags in Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, or Wyoming, in a lifetime of applying. It's just the reality of too many applicants for too few tags. And in the states with point systems, the reality of point creep. A few get lucky every year of course, but on average it simply won't happen. One alternative is to save all that application money and put it into a LO tag in NM or CO. Deer tags though you might be able to draw a few as a NR. And even more likely if you are willing to hunt archery seasons.

What happens I think to most of us is that the more points we get, the more tendency we have to "wait out" the higher and higher demand hunts. If we keep up with that approach, then we might end up never hunting at all. So if you're going to apply for Arizona for instance, set your mind to settling for one of the lower-demand elk hunts that can be drawn for 12 points or less, and stick with the plan. That way you know for sure you will hunt there someday, even if it's not on the "glory" units.

Sorry I knew New Mexico was random draw. Not sure why I put them in there. I might ready up on Arizona again. I believe they changed their process a little a couple years ago. For now with my job and time off I think I am in a pretty good place to do 2 hunts a year out of state. I have the points that as long as a stay to 4-7 point units I should be good to go.

Hopefully Idaho will work out. We have access to PP and hoping this turns into a yearly thing. Wont know until we head up.
