DWR is proposing late season (early November) muzzy hunts on all General Season units meeting the minimum buck/doe ratios (15 on some 18 on others) They would be treated as Limited Entry hunts and bonus points would be used. What do you think of this proposal?

LAST EDITED ON Oct-11-17 AT 08:53AM (MST)[p]I like it... Gives more opportunity, moves a few more folks through the clogged up point system and I miss the days of a late muzzy hunt...

As long as the permit numbers stay extremely low, then I am for it, if they start giving 30 to 40 permits on these hunts then I am extremely against it. 10 or fewer permits on each unit is all I would support.

All for it. I've got 5 deer points I have no desire to use on a LE unit, because I know I can kill a better buck on my preferred GS unit than I can on most LE units. I would dump them, or keep applying until I draw, my GS unit. It would be a fun hunt

I agree with the above statement of keeping permits low. It'll work fine if they don't get carried away and keep increasing the permits. Could be a really fun hunt in some units. Some slammer bucks will get killed. I don't have any LE deer points myself because I'm putting in for elk and have already drawn a LE deer tag. I would maybe consider one of these when I build deer points again. Not sure if I want to wait to draw the henries after elk. And I get to hunt big deer every year I draw a GS tag so this might be a good option.

Love the idea!
Just drew LE elk this year. Will be switching to deer next. As stated above, I just can't see waiting as long as I have for my elk tag.
Create more opportunity, open up the draw a bit, and keep tag numbers low.

Yup, like it as long a permits stay really low. Good way to move folks through the system and provide a cool hunt opportunity.

According to one of the RAC members, if the proposal goes through and is accepted it will decrease the numbers of general season tags by 2-3 permits per every late season muzzy LE tag issued. The number of late season muzzy tags would only be in the 5 -10 permits for each unit. I believe that there will be some type of formula used that includes how far over the buck/doe ratio is over objective, how many general season permits will be issued for the unit overall etc.
would you like to see a certain percentage of the muzzy permits reserved for youth ?

They are doing it now on limited units, my son has one of the northern ( not sure of the exact unit) tags this year, is hunt is from 11/1-11/10 muzzleloader and he had to burn his points to get it, but I agree the tags have got to be managed or our deer herd will eventually end up looking like or cow elk population on the Wasatch!!!!

This is the second year they have had this hunt. I have a tag in a couple of weeks along with two of my buddies for the same hunt. We are getting excited.

I think it would be great if the number of tags are kept in check. That said, I wouldn't burn more than a couple points on any unit to hunt deer with a muzzleloader just three days after the rifle circus ended.

Good thing to roll the dice on and hope for early rut or a bunch of snow.

I am not opposed to the idea if the tag numbers are kept to a minimum. Hopefully, this will help move more folks through the draw system.

I do not support earmarking a set number of these tags for youth. There are already tons of opportunities for youth. It is our job as parents and adults to help our kids take advantage of existing opportunities. I think we have gotten somewhat carried away with catering to youth hunters. Take kids hunting early and often and they will get hooked. They don't need a premium tag or a special hunt. I grew up tagging along with my dad on general hunts and had a blast. Plus, look at our bonus point system. There is no shortage of hunters or demand. Let's focus on creating more opportunity for all hunters.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-14-17 AT 01:46PM (MST)[p]shortening the limited entry wait and increasing the general season wait. kill the best bucks after they lived thru the general season hunts. it will not be 5 or 10 tags because some of the units have more than 30 tags.

Some of You Act Like this is a NEW Thing?

Can Somebody Answer This Question?

How GAWD-DAMNED Much Pressure do We Really need on our already Suffering Herd?
