Santa called. Looking at getting started in bow hunting with 12yr old next year.

Plan on hitting bow shops.

But. Hoping to avoid moneypits. I'm just a blue collar guy, so I want good quality/value, don't need newest, fanciest.

What basic equipment does a kid need(or not need)

Bows. What/who offers the best amount of flexibility for accommodating growth?

Mistakes you've made I might could avoid.

Thank ya much!!

Either find a use mission or get one new. Get the whisker biscuit rest and a youth sized release. There are many youth bows but both my children and several of our 4th kids all shoot the craze.

Regardless of what you get it has to fit, the craze II is awesome. My Daughter is shooting the original craze, my son is shooting the II. Both have been great bows and taken a lot of use...

The craze package with quiver and sight pins is OK, but if you can get a bare bow there are much better pins and quivers on the market. The mathews package is good enough, I am looking at a new set of pins and a quiver for my daughter who will start hunting next year.

Also take the kid shooting at the pro shop. You will be surprised how many kids that are right handed end up shooting left and vice vs. I would definitely make sure which hand they will be shooting with and which eye is truly dominate...

I'm in the same boat. My 12 y/o wants a diamondback which he shot at cabelas. Range of pull and draw weight he should be able to shoot for several years but I don't know that bow. Thoughts?

Hands down the best bow ever made for kids is the Diamond Infinite Edge. 7-70 lbs 15"-30" draw length range and only 3.2 lbs. It's an amazing design to say the least and shoots incredibly well. Keep your eye on the ksl classifieds for used ones. There are 5 of them on there right now.

From there if you are in the salt lake area on Friday nights, get them down to DATUS for the JOAD program. Steve and all the volunteers are incredible and welcoming newer folks into the fold. You kids will love having other kids to shoot with, compete against and just learn the ropes with.

In any case, enjoy the ride. It's super cool when you see how much your ruggers like slinging arrows.

Cheers,
Pete

Have them shoot the bows! I replaced my 25-yr old bow in 2014, and it really helps a bunch if they can shoot several different models and see which they like best.

Look at Archerytalk.com and go to the classified adds. I have bought 2 bows and lots of other stuff there for fraction of the price. KSL is ok, but everyone thinks their bow is worth $500 when they bought if for $500 2 years ago. Archerytalk.com is great. Lots of used or new bows that are bare or all set up.

+1 on the whisker biscuit and determining dominant eye. If they've never shot, lefty or righty shouldn't matter. Go with the eye. I'm right handed, left eye dominant and shoot lefty.

Diamond Infinity Edge for sure. I can't wait to buy one for my 16 month old son. Also agree with a whisker biscuit for a rest. Watch Camofire and get a release, sight, arrows for a great price...seen them on there pretty often.

+1000 infinite edge hands down best for ur kid and buck

Between my wife, kids and I we all shoot hoyt. I like the fact I can change draw length and let-off without a bow press. Which works great as you get better and stronger I can up the poundage and let-off to where they want it.

I don't even look at other bow brands anymore due to they don't have the options that hoyt has. Maybe they do know but I don't know.

Also I watch ebay for when archery shops get in the new year line up the sell the previous year bow for half price. I got a $1200 bow for $600 and was brand new.

Another vote for the Diamond Infinite Edge. Both of my boys used them from about age 11 through 15 or 16 and they are both excellent archers! Be sure to keep the draw length and poundage adjusted properly as your boy grows so his form will not be negatively affected.

Good luck,

NvrEnuf

Thx. I grabbed him a diamond infinate edge. Looks like a cool bow. Got so excited that I was forced to do the " I'm, sweetheart, I kinda need a bow too" phone call.

32" draw

Grabbed a bear br33.

$1000k, 2 bows later...

Thanks for the input
