Hog hunt wanted

In 2018 I want to hunt Texas or any state west of Texas for hogs. I've searched Google for hog hunts but most of those seem like a sham. Any MMer advice here? Ranches to hunt? Realistic prices to expect? How many hogs to kill? I may just have unrealistic expectations as to price etc...

I don't really have any restrictions on hunt weapon or time of year.

Plenty of spots for hogs in Texas. Look for a low fence operation and don't be afraid of the hog outfitters.
You might go to one of the Texas hunting forums and post something or just read the threads relating to it.
Lots of places will be stand hunting over feeders but look for a place with night hunting possibilities.
Hogs are not a slam dunk, they are smart and very wary but very stalkable.
You'll have a blast with the right place.
Many deer outfitters will have hog hunts also. Try to go in Feb.-March .

I am actually headed down next week (Jan.4-7) in a place south of Abilene. I'm super excited because I personally think it is a good deal and I've been talking with the guide for about 6 months now and he seems pretty legit. He sends me updated pictures of the hogs running around the feeders and I think there is something like 6500 acres we are hunting on but I could be wrong on that. I can let you know when I get back around the 8th or 9th if you like. I've only hunted hogs in OK and it was a blast but a high fence 80 acre thing. Not real hunting but it was free. This one is a low fence place. A lot of people think that high fence hunts are crap because they keep animals in but for the most part in parts of Texas, they have high fence areas to keep the unwanted animals out, like hogs. Either way, I can let you know when I get back if you like.

No fence will keep hogs out if they want in bad enough! The high fences are really mostly to control the deer herds within and keep unwanted ones out and have nothing to do with the hogs.

Travis---I'll get back to you in a day or two after I get back from U of M from getting all these stitches out. I may have a place in Texas to get you on that hog hunt and maybe you can even talk me into going and I could visit my Mom in San Antonio then too.

Killed them here, good hunt. Hunted spring turkeys there also. Lots of options all over the state. Go with a ranch that has hogs as an option and not a dedicated "hog hunter". Not saying these guys are the best, but its a free range option I have personally been on.

Also - if a outfit is selling hunts on ebay or have a "give away" they are generally some kind of scam.

I can tell you guys public land to hunt if you want to go that route.

Call Mike McKinny at (915) 328-0645. He's a good guy. He's been advertising here on the site for many years, but I first met him at the big outdoors expo last year and he'll take good care of you, I'm confident of that.

Some of the high fence ranches are put and take type, they release hogs.
And only and proper fence with a buried barrier will keep hogs in or out.

The best place to hunt hogs in in California. Check out SC2 Outfitters. Shawn will take good care of you. Hunt hogs in the mountains along side the elk. ????SS

Same here...national forest east of I45 along the river system. West Texas & panhandle are okay, but you won't find the density like you do around all the water on the East side of the state. Neches/Sabine/Attoyac/Angelina/Trinity river and any of the feeder creeks along them.

Sometimes the best method in East Texas is to walk the river bottom areas with a shotgun or rifle with open sights. Some areas allow buckshot too.

I think I need to hire a scouting service to find where they are and supply me with maps and photos. Info on a specific big pig would be a plus!

venor, ergo sum (I hunt, therefore I am)

I'll mark it on a map...it should look like the Texas pipeline map. D

To be perfectly honest, with the cost outfitters charge for hog hunts, you could join a deer lease in ETX and kill hogs as a byproduct on a yearly basis.

That's actually on my bucket list. I'll definitely look them up for future hunts.

I use buckshot, but I let them bunch up under feeders and then dump 5 loads of #4 buckshot into the whole sounder. A lot less show up next time.

You can just sit tight and wait for the shoats to start squealing when they get up to feed and then move to them.

All the National Forest lands (Angelina, Davy Crockett, and Sam Houston) will have them. Most of this can be hunted with just a license, but some require an Annual Public Hunting Permit too.

Wildlife Management Areas that require a license and Annual Public Hunting Permit are:
Cooper, Caddo National Grassland, Pat Mayse, White Oak Creek, Caddo Lake, Old Sabine Bottom.

There?s more than this, but East Texas is where you can usually take some type of firearm and pig hunt when you want.

I mainly hunt Caddo National Grassland and Old Sabine Bottom and have seen pigs this Fall. My brother killed a nice sow at Cooper too. The important thing is to make sure they're legal to hunt when you go. Some areas close, unlike private land. Some areas restrict weapons/ammunition too.

Google "Angelina National Forest Map" click on Images tab, first image, look at the Northern most part of public towards the center of the picture.

Also, Alabama Creek WMA will hold them down towards the river. You just need to look where a cpl creeks merge together to funnel them. Lately if you were to happen to go when bucks still had antlers you may be in for a surprise given we're a "lease preference" state.

I'm trying to figure out which license I need as a non resident. It?ll be me and my son (who's 11). Do I get a type 157 for me and a type 169 for the kiddo?

This is true, no fence will stop those nasty ass hogs out. Bastards will dig under and get through.

That is correct and if your son hasn't completed a hunter ed course yet he has to be right with you during your hunt.

If you make it down to southern Oklahoma, and want to run hogs with dogs, let me know. I have some buddies that go out a couple times a week and catch quite a few. Hogs are a nuisance to us, as they tear up wheat fields and pastures.

He has his hunters safety but that's good to know.

Where about in Southern Oklahoma? Does it have to be with Dogs or could we rifle hunt?

If you want to make your way out to California let me know. I have a couple people I can recommend depending on what part of the state you want to hunt.
Price wise, I'd guess its $500 or so for a 2 day pig hunt. Not sure what out of state tags and license costs. You can shoot as many pigs as you want as long as you have the tags for them, and season is year round.
Pig hunting in California is really, really good. Keep it on your bucket list.

I just had an outfitter cancel on me for the second time and I am in need of everyone?s help. I need a place to hog hunt next weekend (we would be there March 8th and leave March 11th) in either north Texas (coming from Colorado), Central Oklahoma, or someplace else. It was already a 15 hour drive and really didn't want it to be too much longer. I was heading to a place close to Sweetwater,TX but I finallly just had to get my money back. It would be for 3 adults and my 11 year old son. My son and my cousin (she's 24) have never hunted anything larger than a rabbit so I wanted it to be memorable for them. The place I had booked was around $300/day for unlimited hogs and lodging but i haven't been able to find one like that or if I did, they were booked already. Any thoughts or ideas from the MonsterMuley crowd??

California is about 21 hours away. This may too far or out of budget, but its an option. Good luck, and shoot all of the hogs that you can!
Marc

I'm not too worried about the money aspect of it as I am the driving. I don't want to spend the whole weekend driving and no time for hunting.
