So I booked my first ever bear hunt and will be headed to Prince of Wales Island to hunt over on Kuiu by boat next May. I'm told it is a great bear hunt. Anyone been over there on a hunt like this and can toss an old man some additional advise?
I am planning on lot's of rain and rain gear. They said to bring a big handgun as well, so I'm probably taking my Colt King Cobra stainless 357 over my blued Ruger 44 due to salt water. I'll be taking my 338 Lapua to hunt with.
Should be an adventure whether I kill a bear or not! ?

Helly Hanson Empertech Rain wear. You won't regret it, and will likely spend a lot of time wearing it.

Slam,
I hunted it a couple of years ago. We used a boat as base camp. Skiffs were used for day hunting. One of the best hunts I've been on. PM me if you would like more details.

Are you hunting Kuiu or Prince of Wales? I've spent lots of time on both islands hunting bears. I just got back in early december from Kodiak, hunting blacktails with my daughter. I carried a Dan Wesson Bruin 10mm in case I got close enough to a deer.
Forget the .357; I shot a black bear on POW with a .44 mag Super Redhawk. I was shooting 320 grain hardcast flatnose bullets, which I had loaded to the max. It did it's job but I have since stepped up to the .480 ruger. It impresses bears much more. I will be back on P.O.W. this fall hunting deer and if I draw a tag, hopefully blackbear.

If you have specific questions, pm me. I second Helly Hanson 3/4 length raincoats and either hip boots or waders. Unless you are staying on a boat on Kuiu, you won't stay dry.

I will be on Kuiu in May as well. We are staying in a forest service cabin, and will be day hunting from a 22' Hewescraft. My first time hunting Kuiu, but have hunted POW, Prince William Sound, and other parts of coastal Alaska for black bears previously.
I am looking forward to another DIY adventure. It sounds like the OP will be on a guided hunt, so I expect boat based, which should be a lot of fun.
Good Luck,
Bill

If you end up hunting around Bay of Pillars, expect to get hassled by Glacier Guides. They think they own the island.

Thank you Sir,I'll take note of that and just avoid the drama!
