Question!!

-Hey everyone, new here. I looked around and I think this is the best place to place this thread (sorry if I'm blind and missed it!).

-I'm just wondering if anyone can help me out here.

-I'm a 21 y/o College outdoorsman who has spring break from March 9-19 this year. Going to school to become a game warden/Conservation Officer. And I don't have a whole lot of money (about $2,000 in the bank)

-I'm looking at taking a hunting trip over this time as most of my buddies will be at the party beaches and that's just not my scene. No preference where (in the US or not) or what species (I'd like to stay away from bird hunting if possible as I do a lot of this already). Also open to taking a fishing trip.

-My biggest issue is finding a hunting trip that doesn't break my bank (the cheaper the better).

-Any ideas or previous experiences and prices?

-I have Experience hunting whitetail, turkey, pheasant, and ducks.

-I live in Wisconsin and would probably drive (unless flight is somehow cheaper) to the destination.

-I'd like to keep it cheap ($2,000 isn't cheap for a working college kid)

-Guided or unguided I'm just worried about having an unsuccessful trip if unguided. (Never been on a guided trip either)

-Thanks for your help! Any tips, info, experiences, guide services, locations, etc will be greatly appreciated.

I think your only bet would be a hog hunt. That should keep you in budget. There really aren't a lot of open seasons during spring break for big game. Maybe bear and Turkey?

March is a great time to go fishing in the south too. Or hogs if ya wanna shoot an animal.

The Texas South zone turkey season opens March 17. You could find a good hunt that would probably fit your budget. Should be a really good year for birds to.

Good luck

Put in for drawings with the money. My best advice is to avoid a long trip unless you have a solid tag in your hand. Drawings are the best way to get quality for any reasonable price.

Coyotes. Get a $30 hand call and hit a state with public land. Wyoming, North South Dakota, Eastern MT, Assuming you have a 4x4. In WY for coyotes, no license needed, only a hunters safety card and staying in little towns at a hotel is usually $60-$80 night. Just need a BLM map (GPS and Map Ship are better) a gun and warm clothes.

South Dakota Coyote hunt would be a good one.

-I've done a little yote hunting around here, but SD is an awesome state and I definitely couldn't argue with being out there for a few days!

-I was looking into hog hunts, never been but with the prices I've seen it's looking like that might be the best option for this time of year.

-Definitely looking into fishing trips, I've been out to California (San Francisco area) and fished twice there then once in Florida.....but that was a train wreck.

-thanks for the help so far everyone. Greatly appreciated

Over Spring Break you will likely not get very far into the back country...

I haven't looked up the dates but I think there are some pretty affordable snow geese hunts around E Colorado, maybe the Dakotas. That is something I would love to do.

-hey everyone thanks for all the suggestions!

-as of right now I rounded up a couple of my buddies from my two year college that I played baseball with and spent a lot of time hunting and fishing with.

-we're pretty sure we'll be trying to do a hog hunt somewhere down south(Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, Florida, etc)

-does anyone have any good experiences with a particular ranch and/or guide service down there?

-been doing a lot of research but the prices seem to vary greatly with a lot offering about the same thing.

-thanks again!

-Zach

-we looked at that one but I did a lot of research late into last night haha.

-I think we're going to try to see if a place called Langley Ranch in Centerville, TX has openings for the days we're looking for.

-If not I know independence seemed like the second cheapest option

-Yeah College is a great time for Toothless beaver. Just got to watch out cuz there's plenty of them that carry those nasty beaver diseases.

-Booked a hunt through Newsom ranch near Centerville. Many of the places were already booked.

-I'll be sure to post some pics, should be fun!

If you do a hog hunt, go to Texas. They can hunt at night with lights, and that seems to be the best time to kill those nuisance rodents. You might be able to also hunt predators at night with the same guide.
There is a guide named Lance Vick around lake fork. He might be able to get you a hog/fishing combo set up. Fork is on fire that time of the year for big bass.

I also think a hog hunt would be your best bet. I've never hunted in the south, bur there is some great pig hunting out here in California, and very reasonably priced. Pretty much everywhere in the state has guided hunts, so you could probably throw in a turkey hunt, or a ocean fishing trip.

Not sure what you could get going for a March hunt now. That is good fishing season in a lot of places though. I know down here in AZ, that's right when it really starts picking up! That time frame might be a little too early, but I know a guy who guides fishing trips up in MT. His name is Burke and his email is [email protected]. I'd imagine he wouldn't break the bank. Just another option...
