Late cow elk hunt

I'm researching cow elk hunts for my wife and I.. Looking at Units 40 and 61 in CO but open to other suggestions in CO, UT and ID... Hunted cow elk in UT 10+ years ago but it looks like things have changed since then.. Any info on the above mentioned areas or just general areas to start researching would be greatly appreciated..

Idaho has some over the counter "A" tags that have a late season cow tag attached to them. If you are going to go Idaho you might as well put in the draw for a good tag. Then hunt the OTC tag if you don't draw. Most of those "A" tags are set up as archery tags. But they have a late season tag attached to them. So you can hunt both seasons if you would like. Idaho does not give a discount for a cow tag. So the price is the same as a bull tag. Aprox. $154 license fee and $416 tag fee. Wyoming has a cheaper cow\calf tag that all said and done is about $300.00. Any tag is cheaper in your own state if that is an option for you. And if that matters to you.

Hello Bess!

Well snort I have elk on my place right now. She can come out to the basin and bobcat and I will take her. The only problem is you can't come with her.

Thought you despised cow hunters.

Hey Shadow!

Check Post # 4!

On rare occasion there are Exceptions!:D

Snort,

If you decide to hunt 61 I'd be willing to give you some input, I know that unit fairly well.

Hasbean since I just reitred.

Dang, the doctors did a number on her. Good luck on you and your wife's hunt. I have heard third hand that cow hunting in unit 40 can be tough.

BeanMan, that would be awesome! On average how many inches of snow are on the ground for the 3rd and 4th seasons?

Last few years none. In fact there is pretty close to none up there right now, less than a few inches if The Grand Mesa is any indicator. I'd say it is impossible to guesscast how much snow will be there on any given year, there should at least be some on north slopes but you never know anymore.

BuckSnort,
Like Beanman if you decide 61 I can also help you out. If you guys get a fourth season tag hell you can tag along with us as we hunt it every year.

While the 3rd and 4th seasons can be good, they can also get really hard without weather. I would suggest that you look at the late season hunts that run the month of December. Some can be had with 0-1 NR point others take just a couple. Nothing wrong with the unit you are looking at but you might also consider a Unit 3, or 11/211 or even a unit 22 cow tag. Then you can get an entire month to hunt and all those units have mass amounts of public land. The December hunts have a ton less people as they do not overlap anything else. No OTC Bull hunters, no buck hunters, etc.

Good luck. If you look into the NW area of the state let me know I can help out that direction.

coloradoman, thanks for the offer, much appreciated!

Beanman, right on, just trying to figure out if I should bring a quad or not.. I don't mind chaning up the truck but I'd rather use the quad if possible..

Always bring a quad and chains for the truck that time of year!
I live 40 minutes from great elk hunting in that unit so like beanman we know it very well.

Nobody should hate on cow hunters. If there was just bull tags it would be pretty hard to get a tag.
