What can a Non-Res do?

There has been much discussion on various posts regarding "what can a non-resident do?" Well, I did what all NR's can do. I sent all of the WY G&F Commissioners an e-mail. I gave them a little background on me. Specifically, I average about 1 out-of-state trip per year, with more trips to WY than any other state. And I expressed my opinion on several items. My opinions aren't what is important for this discussion, so I won't mention them.

One of the commissioners responded, and asked how I felt about a particular proposal. At first I didn't fully understand it, but after several exchanges, I did, and shared my opinion. (I thought it was a good idea!)

Although I don't know if any of my opinions will ever get beyond just being a suggestion in a sea of suggestions, I want to thank this commissioner for taking the time to converse with me. He didn't have to do that, but took the time to do so.

Thank you to the WY G&F Commission for allowing me to have input, and thank you for listening.

Now I look forward to passing of the Joe2Kool bill...the one that allows me to purchase an elk, deer, antelope, and moose tag every year, at the cost of $10 per tag! :D :D

Your non resident money for your tag and your tax dollars paying for the USFS to manage the land gives you the right to say something. Nice work.

Your post inspired me to write a bunch of people in Utah Division of Wildlife and asked if they won't consider returning the NRs to being able to apply for only one tag. Since they allowed us to apply for multiple species, it dramatically lowered my odds of pulling an elk tag, which it what I really want to do.

Residents can only apply for one tag, which is the way they want it because they don't want worse drawing odds.

The only reason I can see to do it is to pull in more money. So why not let us only apply for one tag, but multiple species bonus points? That way they get their money and our odds go up tremendously.

And we are really only applying for one tag anyway. Nonresidents are only allowed to draw one LE tag per year. That means if we ever do pull one, we are taken out of the drawings for the other tags we put in for. So we have the illusion that we are applying for multiple tags, but in reality we get sh#&*y odds and can still only draw one tag.

I have been harping on this for a couple of years, but have yet to get anyone in power to listen.

Wouldn't reducing us to 1 drawing and the rest just purchasing bonus points decrease the money they spend on the drawings? If they pay so much per application, it would.

The only way to make the Joe2Cool bill come about it to move to Wyoming for at least one full year. Then you come close to that, especially for resident youth tags.

txhunter, I might be missing something, but how would that have affected your chances for an elk tag? Prior to 2009 we could apply for elk & deer, plus one OIL species. The change in 2009 allowed us to apply for all OIL species. That drastically reduced the draw odds to pull any of the OIL species (Moose, Goat, Sheep, Bison) but should have no effect on Elk or Deer.

Not correct. Before the change, you could only apply for one LE tag. You could not apply for both elk and deer in the same year. That is what residents have currently. They can only apply for elk or deer, but not both in the same year.

I am with TXHUNTER58 on this. I am a Utah resident. And you non res got screwed on this one. People are pushing for the same for res. I hope it never happens. Or I'll never draw again. They also need a few more tags for the NR pool also.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-16-18 AT 02:06PM (MST)[p]I can understand the state wanting to get more money from apps, but if they allowed us to apply for 1 tag and unlimited bonus points, they get their money and we get better odds. Both of us win.

And also, less apps mean less cost to them maybe?

The only thing I can think of that would make them not do this is if they think by stopping the multiple apps, they will lose numbers, but as long as they let you buy bonus points relatively cheap, no one is going to stop applying

LAST EDITED ON Jan-16-18 AT 07:15PM (MST)[p]SOME of these Utah guys now want to change the rules in Wyoming to benefit themselves. I'm sure glad they stood up for the NR in their own state of Utah when all this took place. Too funny....too bad the hunting in TN sucks, or we might just be writing GnF commissioners there to plead our case. I mean after all I'm entitled and do one hunt a year out of state. Now, I wonder how long this post last before it's taken down because I hurt someone's feelings.

It is tough to stand up in Utah for ourselves or for NR. We have a RAC Committee (you will have to read up on it). These committee's are supposed to listen to the sportsmen around the state. But, they dont. A friend of mine was on one as a biologist. He said it didnt matter what they heard, or what they decided, the state would make up their mind irregardless of the RAC.

It is a way to make people feel heard...without actually listening or intending to do something. Utah sportsmen dont have a very big voice. SFW swallows up most of our voices here.

+1 on what Aspen said.

To the wyo commissioners, they have responded back to me as an nr. I was impressed. Maybe its just pr, but WB in Utah could take lesson.

I make a post thanking a WY G&F Commissioner for taking the time to listen to comments from a non-res and somehow it turns into a slam on me and the hunting in my home state? And somehow I feel entitled to an out-of--state hunt? Now I know why people block their profiles.

The hunting in TN is fine. But no mule deer or antelope.

And you are more than welcome to make suggestions to TWRA. Here's a link:
