Buying a lifetime license, then move out of state?

I know this idea has been thrown around here and there. I was just wondering if anyone had first hand experience doing this. Say you are a resident of AZ, 100% legit resident. Buy a lifetime license and then years later, or whenever, move to another state.

I believe you will still go into the resident pool in the draw, but pay the non-resident fees. Is this correct?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-18 AT 02:39PM (MST)[p]That is one of the main selling points advertised in Lifetime License sales for most states. You still are exempt from NR quotas and subject to any resident restrictions. Idaho used to stress that in their sales, you pay NR fees but avoid the 10% limitation.

I see in the current rules/regs that they do a 3-year residency verification for your lifetime certificate to determine whether to issue your actual license as resident or non-resident.

I have a lifetime license in Idaho. It has more than paid for itself. I left Idaho 18 years ago. The renewal is for 3 years and the paperwork is minimal.

thanks for the info. So it looks like ID and AZ you get to stay in the resident pool. Looks like UT you are treated as a non-res as soon as you move out.

I believe you are correct. When I took the AZ Hunter Safety course a couple of years ago, they mentioned that. Seems like some people were renting PO boxes in AZ to "claim" residency and got caught. The instructors advised against trying to do that! :D :D

People have been trying this with drop boxes for mail in Nevada to avoid state taxes or other reasons. Really not smart, and in some cases a federal boo boo in addition to state. We may not like the rules, but generally better to follow them.

Ten years ago I bought an Illinois LL for $210. Before the DNR issued it, they had a CO drop by my residence unannounced and do a complete verification, including interviewing neighbors. Afterwards the CO said I was a rare legit applicant, and that 85% of the applications were fraudulent.

During my processing they gave up and changed the law so if you moved out of state you lost your resident privileges. There's a lot of abuse that goes on with LL's.

Same here...best investment I ever made!

I have a lifetime license in AZ and live in CO now. Best thing ever. I still get charged NR prices in AZ, but the cap doesnt apply, so in that sense I am treated like a resident in both states.

My son will be graduating from UofA in just over a year. He was born and raised in AZ but he is thinking about moving out of state afterwards.

His graduation gift from me will be a lifetime hunting license. I believe it is right around $660 for him.

Someday he will thank me.

For all of you guys following this thread and thinking about a life time license, think about what your needs and wants really are. While a combination (hunting and fishing) license would be great, they are sometimes quite expensive. For example, In Idaho it is about a 65/35% split in the costs, or a little better deal than the two added together for a combo.

If you get just the hunting one, if you come back you can get a NR fishing license cheap and in one to two, or weekly increments. That's affordable. They don't sell daily hunting licenses do they? Each state is a little different, but definitely check out what is available before you just jump in and buy one.

No brainer for me, buy the life time hunting license before your leave the state and save around $500, you avoid the NR quotas in the draws, and buy a fishing license if you draw a tag and come back.
