Remington Filing For Bankruptcy In Near Future

It's been a rough year or so for gunmakers. Absent the fear among gun owners that the federal government will in some way restrict gun purchases and ownership, gun sales have tanked.

In an exclusive report, Reuters cites people familiar with the matter who say that iconic gunmaker Remington Arms is searching for financing to allow the firm to file for bankruptcy protection. Remington has been trying to restructure its $950 million debt load ahead of a $550 million term loan maturing next year.

The maturing loan is trading at about a 50% discount to full value and a $250 million loan is trading at around $0.16 on the dollar, according to Reuters.

But the company?s debt load is just one part of Remington?s problem in rounding up financing. The other big issue is reputation risk.

The firearms maker is controlled by private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management and, according to Reuters, some of the firm?s investors refused to put more money into Remington following the school shooting in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, that left 20 children and six adults dead. A Remington Bushmaster rifle was used in the killings.

Other U.S. gun and ammo makers have had a lousy year. Shares of Smith & Wesson maker American Outdoor Brands Corp. (NASDAQ: AOBC) have tumbled more than 50% in the past 12 months. Sturm Ruger & Co. Inc. (NYSE: RGR) is down about 18%, and ammo maker Vista Outdoor Inc. (NYSE: VSTO) had traded down about 36% before reporting better-than-expected results last week and recovering about 13% in a couple of days.

Remington?s sales for the first nine months of last year were down 27%, and the company posted an operating loss of $28 million during that period.

My guess is this stems from the liability created from all the law suits. Clean the slate and start over... Still won't bring me to purchase a newer Remington.

saddling up anyway."

United States Gypsum did the same thing years ago, they do it so they can pay out the settlements and cant be sued afterwards.

"We don't have a gun problem we have prescription drug problem."

Absolutely inexcusable business practices have saturated the American workplace and is just as responsible for killing manufacturing opportunities within the USA as government regulations.

People's overreaching greed, fed by an ocean of cheep money has led to this.

The fact that their gross has fallen %27 is a lame excuse for bankruptcy.

Firearms and ammo manufacturers had it good under the Obamessiah administration. Apparently sales are down.

I own several of Remington's old standbys but none of the newer models.

Remington brought this on themselves over the past 15+ years. Inferior quality and piss poor customer service takes its toll on sales, once word gets out.

Big Green has made one mistake after another and changed marketing directions from year to year. The Etronx was a massive failure and money dump. Then they figured importing Russian Baikals and stamping Remington on them would fool anyone. Then they went on a massive spending spree, acquiring other firearms companies at inflated prices. The Rp series of handguns is one more failure.

Pretty much everyone in the firearms industry has seen this coming for years, because Remington has been the walking dead for that long. Only the Obama administration fueled gun buying spree for the last 8 years kept them walking this long.

So?

It's Obama's Fault?:D

It Won't Be Long and a 22" PISSCUTTER will be known as a Trophy that will be put on the Wall!

This is how I see it too. Combination of lots of factors. I think they also chased too many new product lines and verticals, and got away from their core. Should've done a rigorous 80/20 analysis and closed down the lines and locations that weren't paying for themselves. This would've been the move 10 years ago though... seems like it's a little late for that now.

My biggest worry is that after I'm dead my wife will sell my hunting gear for what I told her I paid for it!

I also have 2 rem. rifles that I have been using since I was 15 and now 60,and I believe they are good for another 10,000 years, and if they made them like a pickup truck I would have needed 30 of them. unfortunate for Remington I wont need another one.

When Cerberus bought Remington in 2007, Remington was only $250 million in debt. Now they are $950 million in debt. This is what happens when corporate execs only care about yearly bonuses.

I still have faith! I got my $100 check today!! :D

I love the Remington old action a lot. I like rebuilding the Remington?s into fine shooting machines.Remington had a hell of a rifle. Now you can buy any Remington caliber at Walmart with a scope for around 400.00 dollars. The actions are rough, the chambers have burrs, and the so called blueing comes off the barrel when you pull the stupid sticker off the barrel. The new x mark pro trigger is a joke. I do not understand why they would not make a deal with Timney triggers to install on there new rifles with all the problems they have had with triggers. In my opinion they should have focused on continuing building quality rifles instead of cheap junk. They get what they deserve.

Anybody else noticing how this is being played into the anti-gun protesting?

I saw an article this morning that had headlines something to the effect of "Remington, maker of AR-15s, is going bankrupt". I feel like people are turning a situation that has had writing on the wall for years into a win for gun control advocates to further push their agenda. The article makes it sound like anti-gun protesting put Remington out of business. Pretty ridiculous.
