What do you dress your kids in?

Staying with the youth thread, I am taking my 12 year old twins on an antelope hunt in Wyoming this year and they have some stuff but not a ton. With them growing so quickly I don't want to invest in something ridiculously expensive that they will grow out of in two seasons. What do you guys dress your kids in? Brand/store/layering type system etc. Thanks!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-14-18 AT 06:11AM (MST)[p]Layers and extra clothes and cheap camo usually from Walmart they grow out of it so fast I won't buy the good stuff yet if there like my kids they'll get wet and muddy fast hahaha

The children's place. My wife gets them camo 6 pocket pants from there that are cheap, and surprisingly indestructible.

Kings camo is having a spring cleaning sale right now. $20 hooded jackets. $15 goodies. I get my boys stuff every year about this time when stuff is clearing out.

Boots are the hard one though. Especially if you want Gore Tex and something decent. Cabelas Iron Ridge are good boots, gore tex, but a little heavy. I picked up my 12 yr old a pair of a Asolo hikers from Sierra Trading for last year, color was a little ugly, but he loved them.

Thanks for the heads up, picked up a couple things.

Cammo is designed to fool hunters into opening their wallet. Animals key in on motion and good luck getting your kids to be totally still. Get your kids some decent outdoor clothing they can wear year round and don't worry about the color. They are a lot shorter than us and will be below the line of sight of whatever you are after mostly anyway.

Deer and antelope are early season hunts for us. We also don't go on crazy back pack hunts for game, ie: road hunt and glass. (Ohhhhh. Nooooo). But it's good for the girls and they don't care. They just get to spend time with Dad.

Besides the roadside bucks are just as tasty.

Since my boy was 6 he has tagged along on different out of state hunts that I feel like he can handle. And most of the clothes he wears for them are from Walmart. He doesn't need the best technical clothing like stika, kuiu, firstlite, kryptek, etc.

At 6 he went to Colorado with me for a 3rd season elk hunt. We car camped but had to hike in 3 miles everyday before the hunting got good. I would throw a couple Walmart sweatshirts, sweat pants, long johns, and a cheap camo coat and pants I found from wherever kids camo is on sale and he was fine.

Last year antelope hunting was even easier because it wasn't as cold.

Boots and shoes are a little tougher. Sometimes his mom finds him some boots that fit at a thrift store and sometimes we buy them brand new. They only last for that one season until he grows out of them.

Main thing is that they are warm enough.

Here he is with a cow I shot in Colorado when he was 8.

Like many have said, the most important is to keep them comfortable. Camo is not nearly as critical as people think. However a cheap set of camo hunting clothes might raise their excitement level a bit. Be careful not to skimp too much on footwear though. Cold, wet or blistering feet will ruin their fun pretty fast.

Bargain Cave or clearance items. We learned early on to keep our boys warm and dry. That was #1. Camo and proper sizing (other than shoe/boots) wasn't nearly as important as I thought either. So while doing our regular shopping we kept an eye out for deals. Over a few years we built up a selection of quality clothing and passed them on to the next kid. Even today with my son's in their 20's we still have these old worn clothes. Someday my grand children might need them. I hope they do...:)

My 14 year old daughter has done a fair amount of hunting in Wyoming for a kid. She doesn't have any expensive stuff. We've bought hiking boots from STP, those were probably the most expensive thing. But she has a little brother to pass those on to. My kids always have muck boots too, just for around the place and they've used them for hunting.

She's worn bright colored snow pants and coats and done fine. I think the only camo she has is on old fleece jacket that was mine when I was a kid.

She's killed some decent animals wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

I appreciate all the feedback, we're about on the same page. I did find some discontinued rocky youth boots for each kid for $49 each and have been adding things from buy/sell groups etc. I did break down and get them some polar thermal base layers off of Amazon and now we just need to find some pants. But thanks again to all who posted, and great cow elk!

Like said above. Whenever Kings has a sale pick up a few things. Cheap Walmart camo works good for a growing kid.
