The Great Larry Mower "Yelum".

I am at a loss 0f words for Larry Mower. "Yelum" passed away. I am completely paralyzed from the chest down and permanently confined to a wheelchair due to a tragic injury. My point is Yelum is the only person I've met in wheelchair who has never complained about his circumstances. I am relatively new to Utah and have only spoken to Larry on the phone a handful of times. Larry always gave me the best advice as when to see the most bucks on Antelope Island ,low light conditions, and overcast days. Just talking to him for a few minutes and getting his advice I would always see more bucks. Larry gave me information on the transplants of where the deer from Antelope Island went. Larry knew if these deer had twins, collars, or triplets. He was an an expert on the lives and habitats of mule deer.

Larry offered to give me a pair of shed replicas that I had lost that were similar to his set free of charge. Larry never spoke badly about any of the big hunting guides or their competition. He was offered an action track chair for $16,000 but declined and gave it to a wheelchair hunting group. This man always put his family and friends first and gave them opportunities most of us would only dream of. Larry would always call or email back after my trips to Antelope Island even though he often had a fever or was feeling sick. Larry will always be a Hall of Fame Legend in the Mule Deer Hunting World. He made hunting and photographing mule deer more enjoyable for me, knocking down many barriers for people like me with disabilities. RIP ,Yelum. You will be missed and my thoughts and prayers go to your family.

I'm sorry that I couldn't make it to your funeral. Although I personally can't afford it, I suggest that we erect a plaque or other symbol to remember his love and passion for Mule Deer on Antelope Island.

Your friend,
Greg Redbluff 77

I could never take Yelum's place, but the adversity that he overcame will always be an inspiration for me. "The key to immortality for Yelum was living a life worth remembering"

RE: The Great Larry Mower "Yelum".

Wow, I'm very sorry to learn of Yelum's passing. I always enjoyed his posts and his input. I met him a few years back and always considered him a class act. He will be missed. fatrooster

I've been a member of this website for many years now. My handle name has changed a few times since 2000. I first talked with Larry "Yelum" Mower back in 2005. He gave me so much great advice on scouting and hunting mule deer over the years. Please read my above first post.

Quoted from member smokepolejohnson:
Any time there are antlers and people and parking lots and Big buck excitement, it’s almost like hes there wheeling around. The island should really name something in his remembrance. He was there for years long before the commercialized hunting and tags came to be. PiR Yelum ,

well said smokepolejohnson

Guys, I really think it's time to name the road going into Antelope Island "after Larry "Yelum" Mower. Or we should all gather together and get a plaque or memorial with a picture and write up of Larry's dedication and compassion to mule deer in memory of Larry "Yelum" Mower at Antelope Island. Larry Mower inspired many mule deer enthusiasts and fanatics. It's time we all give Larry "Yelum" Mower, the respect he needs. Let's get that Larry Mower plaque up. RIP Yelum.

heres a video, for those of you who don't know about Larry Mower. I tried to contact a few people in the past about getting the road out to Antelope Island named after Larry Mower, and I talked about getting a plaque in memory of Larry Yelum Mower to some MM members, but some people just weren't interested. I'm not on social media, but maybe someone like Eric Chesser, Zach Griffith can get the ball rolling on this idea. I'm going to contact Adam Eakle at KSL outdoors or Founder on MMuleys and see if they can start a page or a poll to see if people or MM members will actually contribute and donate $ to build a plaque or memorial at Antelope Island in memory of Larry aka Yelum Mower. RIP Yelum :)(y)

I Don't remember What Year It was?

Maybe FatBanty Can?

But I Drove To YELUMS House!

And We Loaded Up In YELUMS Van With Help From Wife Cathy/Ms YELUM!

Then We Headed South To Nephi For AntlerFest!

I Don't Know If YELUM Was too Impressed With My Driving?

We Just Got Headed South & He Said:

I Didn't Know This Van Could Go This Fast!:D

We Get Down To Nephi/AntlerFest!

And We Met FatBanty & One Of His Buddies From Nevada Which I Can't Remember His Name?

We Also Met Longun From Wyoming!

It's A Day I'll Never Forget & Always Remember!

So Glad I Got To Spend A Day With Him!

I Spent Some Time With YELUM At The First Couple Of EXPOS As Well!

Then Another Time We Met At Another AntlerFest at Sportsman's Warehouse & Met SirHuntsalot!

Times I Wouldn't Trade For Nothing!

Hope You're Looking Down On Us YELUM!

You're Still With Us My Friend!

He was a class act no doubt about it. It also seemed to me that he knew more about mule deer than most anybody I know of. I hope you can get it done Redbluff77 it would be an honor I think he's worthy of. I never met him but had some interesting conversations with him on here in which I learned something most everytime.

I see lots of these instagram hero flat brim hunting legends in their own minds often mention "Yelum" as their inspiration and their youtube videos and they reference that Yelum got them started in mule deer hunting. I wonder if these social media hunting influencers that think their God would actually donate money toward a Larry Mower plaque/memorial on Antelope Island? Larry Mower used to help out Doyle Moss guide service year around by keeping tabs on those huge A island bucks. I wonder if Doyle Moss would help to raise some coin toward a memorial plaque?

I'd be willing to put something on our show to raise some money for a plaque honoring Larry on AI. State Parks would need to approve it. But, I think with a little persuasion, we could get them to allow it. Larry was a great influence on many, myself included. One of you would have to start it. I can definitely publicize it. In fact, I'll pitch in the first hundred bucks.

Thank you Adam. I talked to Doyle Moss today and he was really close to Larry Mower. Doyle thought it would be a good idea to have a plaque in memory of Larry Mower at the Island. I called some employees and managers at Antelope Island today and told them about this Larry Mower memorial plaque idea. They are going to make a few phone calls and get back to me. One roadblock is this. The Antelope Island memorial and statue's for those military members who tragically died in the helicopter crash a few years back. RIP to them all. The helicopter memorial is on city property before the flagpole and main guard station , pay booth whatever its called before you enter the Antelope Island. Antelope island is state property and in years past they wouldn't allow the military helicopter crash memorial on state property. I really don't see this being a problem if we add a Larry Mower memorial on the Antelope Island. We still need to get the ok to build the Yelum memorial. I might have to call the Utah state attorney general and Utah governor's office to get this project approved, but I'll give it a few days. The Utah Gov and Utah attorney general have been very helpful to me in the past regarding disability issues and keeping the freedom to allow disabled and paralyzed hunters the right to continue hunting. Let's gain some momentum on getting this Yelum memorial approved., thanks

Guys, I'm working tirelessly to get this Larry "Yelum" mower memorial plaque built on Antelope Island. I have lots of medical problems being paralyzed and I have poor internet service where I live. I can't be the one to start the fundraiser page for Larry Mower. I'm not making excuses, I'm being brutally honest. I can donate a few hundred bucks toward a Larry Mower plaque, or I can donate a 215 inch Henry's mountain antler rack to the project. I've contacted hushin hunting crew and doyle moss about this memorial. Maybe we can build a Larry Mower memorial by the new archery range on Antelope island. I hear a local artist donated a bronze sculpture of a mule deer out on AI a few years back. Any other ideas guys? That might be another idea. I'm very serious and passionate about getting this Larry Mower plaque built in honor of Larry. RIP YELUM I need your help guys, thanks Greg?

Larry "Yelum" Mower was very compassionate and dedicated to make sure the mule deer species populations would be very healthy in Utah. Unfortunately he passed away to soon. I think "Yelum" was a beacon of hope and a trailblazer in regards to the survival of all animal species on Antelope Island. Even for non hunters, in my opinion hunters/ non hunters should all pay tribute to this man and help donate to a plaque in memory of him. Larry Mower was a self-less man always putting others before himself. He would be scouting/ hunting for and helping countless hunters in Utah and Wyoming have success. On a few occasions he would be in the field with a high temperature and sick, but still out there hunting and grinding, and helping with mule deer and bighorn sheep conservation projects in Utah. He was a man of great morals and common courtesy, traits that we see less of in today's in modern world. There was a wheelchair hunting group that wanted to donate a $16,000 action track off road wheelchair to Larry, but he declined and insisted the group give the wheelchair to another hunter.

Well it was us here at MM that started collecting money for Larry to buy an action track chair. Larry told me that he appreciated us thinking about him, but he wanted it donated to a group in UT that focused on getting disabled youth out to hunt for the first time. It was an amazing response and we collected the money very quickly. Larry sure loved mule deer and it’s nice folks remember him.

I hadn't thought about the archery range.

Seems like a perfect place.

But, even further, I wonder if they would sell the naming rights for it?
This is an excellent idea. Let's rename the new antelope island archery range "The Larry "Yelum" Mower Archery Range!!

I didn’t know Larry, but I loved seeing his stuff. I’d contribute if they approve the project.

I’m guessing there is going to be A LOT of red tape to cut through before you get a yes, unfortunately. But I hope it can go forward. That would be a really cool gesture for a guy that was an inspiration to a lot of people.

Sorry I missed this I've been gone all week.

I dated Larry's sister during High School days @ Layton. He was way young back then like in 1-2 grade.

I can reach out to her if you need/would like me to?

He lived a couple blocks south of me here in Roy.

Do we need to reach out to our State area Rep or to the Utah Parks to help ya with you quest?

Thanks

Robb

Yes, that would be great. I've already reached out to a few state reps. and politicans. Whatever you can do to help that would be great. I've contacted the Utah State Parks already. The more people calling the State Parks the better. I'm still waiting for an answer to get the ok for the Larry Mower plaque on Antelope Island. That would be nice if you called Larry's sister as well. Thanks

I called and left voicemails and emails with Utah Governor Cox, Utah Attorney General Reyes, spoke with Antelope Island Park manager Jeremy Shaw, and a few other politicans and state park employees in regards to the AI Island memorial plaque. I would also call the Utah DWR director Justin Shirley and leave him an email or a voicemail. If you guys want to help get the Larry Mower plaque approved and built we need to start calling these people any communicate with them. This will require teamwork with lots of Monster Muley members coming together if we want to get this thing done(y)

Mike Schultz the Majority leader of the State House of Representatives would be one to contact. He lives in Hooper, approx. 1 mile West of Yellum's home. 10 miles from the AI causeway. He is on the Natural Resources Committee. He won the AI mule deer auction tag last year and donated it to a Veteran. I'm fairly sure he was aware of Larry.
I know Mike really well but it would come better from someone besides me.
I knew Larry from about 1998 and chauffeured him many times over the years. Larry could spend hours glassing the Island bucks.
I'm in financially and would donate labor to the cause. I'm close to the family and they can be of help.
Please pm me for more info.

Thank you everyone for your input on the Larry Mower plaque at Antelope Island. * Just a quick update : I've been communicating with Antelope Island State Park staff over the last few days. They knew Larry quite well and most of the State Park staff are in favor of building a plaque in memory of Mr. Mower. I feel confident we can get the approval of the plaque without involving the Utah Governor, Utah Attorney General, or the Utah DWR director. This process might take a few days or a few weeks. ( This is just my honest opinion) If you guys want to send me a hunt story of you and Larry that would be great. Or if you want to send me a PM on what Larry meant to you as a person that would be great. Larry Mower was compassionate and dedicated to the preservation of mule deer. He was a mule deer fanatic. We should also include in the plaque memorial in my opinion, that Larry Mower was dedicated in conservation and preservation of all wildlife species, ( or the big game animals on Antelope Island and in Utah) That way environmentalists, hunters, and non hunters will understand the impact that Mr. Mower made on the outdoors in Utah. and it would be easier to get the plaque approved. I think the best area to put this memorial plaque is right next to the life-size bronze mule deer buck statue on Antelope Island. Larry really loved that statue. Larry's family has been notified on this plaque idea and they are in support of the memorial plaque. I'm still open to ideas on this plaque, and I encourage you all to call who you want on this idea : politicians, hunters, Larry's family etc. Thanks Greg

I gladly donated to the Trax chair and am more than happy to donate now. Where do we send the check?
Thanks for your help and support. We haven't gotten the plaque approved yet for Larry Mower. I would hold off on sending a check. I'll do my best to keep everyone posted if and when the plaque gets approved. I'm pretty confident we will get the okay for the plaque soon. Treedagain, feel free to contact Larry's friends or family if you have an ideas for Mr. Mower's memorial plaque.

This is good to hear. My buddy talked to Utah Chairbound Sportsman. They are in support of donating and building a plaque out at Antelope Island in memory of Yelum. There is an old VHS tape that Yelum donated to the Utah Chairbound Sportsman with "highlights and video of Larry Mower's hunts in Utah." Yelum made the tape so the Chairbound Sportsman would gain exposure and positivity in the disabled hunting community. I really wish someone would find this VHS tape and convert it into a DVD. I've talked to a few MMuley members and they are in contact with the Antelope Island Park staff. Still waiting for an answer I guess. Mike Schultz or Stuart Adams would be some politicians who can help get permission for this project.

Just a quick update on the Larry "Yelum" Mower Antelope Island Plaque. Today, I talked to the park staff on Antelope Island. They were very helpful and supportive. The suggestion was to having a park bench erected with his name and engraved with a mule deer and a short story about his wildlife conservation efforts in Utah. A bench would cost around $1,000 or we discussed erecting a small plaque with the same details. A new law has to be established on Antelope Island in order for this to happen and for this park bench to be completed. This process might take some time. Input on Larry's life story and or wildlife conservation in Utah from Larry Mower's family and close friends is welcome. Thanks

It would be nice to dedicate a park bench on Antelope Island with Larry Mowers picture/name on it. Additionally, I would like to add a bronze/ rusted plaque similar to one with a mule deer silhouette like Larry had on his mailbox in front of his house. See the above "Larry Mower hit list video" in 1:00 minute mark it shows Larry Mowers mailbox at the start of the video. Kudos to Rep. Mike Schultz. He was a class act in donating that AI Island mule deer tag last year to a wounded warrior. Mike Schultz also said he'd support this Larry "Yelum" Mower plaque. I'll keep y'all posted when I get more details on the plaque memorial!!

Just a quick update on the Larry "Yelum" Mower Plaque update on Antelope Island. I spoke with a few staff members from Antelope Island and staff members from the Utah State Parks. With the support of a few people, we are thinking about placing a bench, shade shelter, tree, or a similar enhancement on Antelope Island in Yelum's memory. We could affix a plaque to this improvement, featuring a subtle message in 3 sentences that acknowledges Yelum's invaluable contributions to Antelope Island and wildlife. I'd be happy to collaborate with a few Monster Muleys members on crafting the wording for this plaque. The wording must be no more than 3 sentences I was told. I think the metal art of a mule deer buck silhouette or similar metal plaque artwork would look nice on Larry "Yelum" Mower's memorial plaque on Antelope Island. This type of metal art is what Larry Mower had on his mailbox. I would like to include an ADA-accessible shade shelter with a concrete pad, along with a park bench with Larry "Yelum" Mower's name and or 3 sentences about his life and wildlife conservation work. The write-up about Larry's life can be attached to the plaque. I'll try and run this idea by Larry Mower's family and friends. Hopefully, they can chime in and contribute to this memorial plaque. Utah Politician Mike Schultz made a few phone calls and helped out. We are probably still a few weeks away from making the final decision. Thanks _Redbluff77

"Larry enjoyed the beautiful sunrises and sunsets. He loved spending his time viewing all the wildlife, especially the world class mule deer with his family and friends on Antelope Island."
That pretty much sums up my experiences with my friend Larry on our many trips to the Island.
We talked alot and if we had had a few more years we might have solved all the world's problems. Lol
