Just Wondering about the Pros & Cons of MOA Versus MIL Turrets used on a Hunting Rifle?

Preferences?

Let's Hear them & Thanks!

Whichever system you choose, just get comfortable with it. Lots of practice. I like MOA, but have never looked into the MIL system. mtmuley

Did a longe range shooting school put on by military snipers. Of course they all were in favor of mill and wanted me and the other MOA guys to switch over. Seemed to me mill may be more accurate at very extended ranges over 1000 yds. More fine elevation adjustment per turret click. It also was easier to range targets with mills rather than moa but who does that anyway with products like a G7 rangefinder now days. I still like my moa but am considering making a change with my next setup

1/4 moa is a bit finer adjustment than .1 mil (.34 moa). I doubt that will matter on a big game animal at any reasonable range.

The mil system converts to even decimal meters very closely at 100 yard increments so keeping the math straight is a bit easier if you think in meters high at yardage distance. I think that's why the military prefers mils. Plus if the turrets are in moa and the reticule in mils, another thing to think complicate things.

Moa and inches at 100 yard increments are just enough off that you have something else to think about at longer range or smaller targets (varmints) if trying to convert inches to moa.

I have always used MOA. My G7 range finder uses MOA and adjusted to my yardage turret. The newest G7 does MOA or MIL. I think it really depends on what you get use to or what works for you. What is the easiest for your old mind to use. :)

I use MOA but a friend will bounce from one to the other (which I'd find problematic for my old brain)

You know you can put a yardage turret on your scope . You can use a Leica range finding binoculars or a G7 range finder. It will give you the shoot to yardage. You can change the chip in the Leicas for different guns. The G7 holds five guns in its memory. I use one with my yardage turret and another gun with Moa dail.

You should just lick the dust off that front sight and do what ya' gotta do. No need for those fancy telescopic sights.

The FFP v SFP debate rages but it's a matter of application and personal preference.

If you "dial" every range then it doesn't matter which because power doesn't matter but if you're trying for speed??? at long range??? then the FFP scopes with Mil or MOA reticles are the way to go.

Lots to think about and lots of fun to have!!!

For me, I can't quite get used to growing crosshairs so I'll stay with SFP for now!

20 years later Bessy.. better late than never. I use both. If you argued the finer points of each them mil is a bit more intuitive.. start with one or the other and stick with it..does not matter

I carry my gun with its Turret covered and set at 325 yards. You can just pull up and shoot at anything close range. Close range meaning 350 yards and closer.
