Trying to justify new gun technology

I know this seems like a rhetorical question, but there are so many options out there for new rifle calibers, how does someone decide what would be best for their individual needs? I have been doing a lot of reading and really like what the 6.5X284 has to offer. One of the negative arguments that is often brought up is that if a guy travels to a different state and discovers he needs more ammo, he isn't going to run to Wal-Mart and get another box. When taking that into consideration, I see nothing wrong with a 7mm Mag. I know I would be happy with either round. On the other hand, I shoot custom loads for my 300 win mag and have always taken more than enough ammo for any trip I have ever been on, running out of ammo has never been an issue for me.

What are your thoughts on whether the new calibers are worth pursuing, or if a well-tuned classic caliber is adequate?

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

WTH You Been?

I Don't know what Your 300 WIN MAG or My 7MM MAG wouldn't do for a Guy?

Ya!

I've got Bigger!

And I Do Like the BIG BORES!

But I Hunt with the Same Gun I've been Packing for nearly 40 years!

Alot of Guys now days can Shoot in to Next Week!

With the Rifle I Hunt With I Can't & Won't!

I'm Hoping Right Now that 1911 has Located me some Reasonably Priced Ammo for My 338-378 Weatherby!

Every time I Shoot it I get 2 Ouches!:D

But You Can't beat adding another Weapon to the Collection!

You Never Tell Ms kawboy you 'Want' another Gun!

It's a 'Need'!:D:D:D

Just had this talk with my dad and buddy that are hardcore bullet guys.

I realized that they love tinkering and reloading more than I do. I feel that if you gave me just my 300 win I could deal with it and most wouldn't argue.

They do make some new (er) calibers that really get great numbers.

If you want a new rifle in a different cartridge that's all the justification you need . New rifles are simply fun , especially if you reload.

I have a safe full of them, and each has a special allure for differing reasons. However, mostly if I am hunting medium game out to 300-400 yards I choose my 7mm Rem Mag. and tailor the bullet to the task. For anything over those ranges or bigger animal, the nod goes to a 300 RUM. I don't think you can kill them too dead. :)

I guess you have to ask yourself how many guns you want, and balance that with how many you can afford without affecting your family home life, welfare, or essentials. I know guys who will bring a new gun home when they are skimping on food or bills. DUMB!!!

To each their own, I guess

Life is short, buy the gun.

I remember one specific hunt with you out of state where you forgot bullets and dad had to make me give you some of mine, but that's the one and only time it happened lol.

Buy Cahunter's 6.5x284 in the classifieds, I can promise you won't regret it... that's a well built gun at a great price...

Most of the "new caliber" talk I hear or read is centered around better BC bullets and less muzzle blast for more efficient long distance shooting. That generally means you are rolling your own bullets and packing plenty for every trip. I'd say forgetting bullets is a cop-out.

Their's no major inefficiency about your current rig, especially if you can stack em on top of each other. But I seem to recall someone once said "you can never own too many guns", and in my youth, a married friend once told me, "buy all the guns you want before you get married".
Both statements ring with an air of wisdom

One of our good MM friends (who's name rhymes with eek), is building me one more gun (probably the last). He insists that, he's only trying to make me interesting and Jazz up my life!

It's Father's Day so go for it.

6.5x284 is cool. If that doesn't work for you, add a 26 Nosler or 6.5 Weatherby, 264 Mag or even a Creedmoor. Then again, add all of them--you had to test all of them out! It's Father's Day!
