LAST EDITED ON Jul-11-18 AT 11:17PM (MST)[p]This moose would not leave the trail and was about 10 feet from my motorcycle. When I tried to walk down to it, he put his head down and was staring at me. I waited for him to walk off about 40 yards. I jumped on the motorcycle and revved it up. When I drove off he actually came towards me a little bit. eventually I cruised off and he turned the other way. I would be shocked if this moose does not go all time Boone and Crockett. He still has some growing to do as well.

What do you guys think this will score? I have him right around 160. How much bigger will he get. I think he breaks 170 when all is said and done.

Shooter for sure!
Score? I dunno but I have a "minimum book" B&C and solid P&Y bull and this one should score above mine.

As far as record book moose goes, he'll definitely be over the 140 minimum as has a great chance at breaking 155 net, but he might not. By the time you see the points coming out the top, he won't add any more paddle length, but will add some point length on the back. That won't help his score. Hard to voice this out loud, but he's weak on paddle length, has good paddle width, good spread, ok on countable points. A definite shooter for sure, but no where near a 170 bull when its said and done.

Here's a bull I passed up because we I couldn't guarantee he'd break the 155 net mark because of paddle length. He might just make or miss it and it wasn't worth the risk on a OIL tag that I had.

Here's a velvet pic of my biggest bull that grossed 173 and netted 167 4/8.

All things being equal I believe its the extra 6-8 inches of paddle length on each side that distinguishes between a 150 and a 170 caliber bull.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-12-18 AT 02:13PM (MST)[p]I agree he is a little short on paddle length I I would say his pedal width is really good. I hope somebody gets him and we can see what he scores. I think he will make the books. Hopefully we will get to see. What do you think he scores right now 30hart? I was thinking he could add another 10 in before he is done growing. With a touch more length and a couple more scorable points. That quadruple front paddle is pretty sweet.

The sad thing is to score him you have to take the weaker pieces and double them from either side. Its hard w/o seeing other angles. I have him 146-148 net right now. He'll only add a couple inches to each side so should finish 150-152 net if we're lucky. 45 width, 6.5 bases, 18 points if he finished good. 27 inch paddles on length but hard to judge so maybe he goes 29 max because of the good fronts. 8-9 inch paddle width on weak side.

I was not aware that you double the weaker side. I was thinking he would gross between 160 to 170 and still net good enough to make the books. Here were my thoughts.
Mass 13
Paddle length 28 per side so 56.
Paddle width 12, so 24.
Points 21
Width 44

Gross 158 right now and then maybe add a little. It looks like we disagree on paddle width. I could be wrong.

Sorry I meant double the weaker side for net...ya that's the great thing about debating on a couple of pics. Multiple angles in daylight and you can get pretty close. On my bull, all 4 of us had him pegged...165-170 net.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-12-18 AT 03:10PM (MST)[p]I'll have to add that 30Hart knows his moose scores really well. He took one look at mine and wasn't but inches off. I think we scored it in his garage the first time and ultimately the official measurement was the same as ours.

Gotta say it is sad to read the negative about such a neat critter. Guess that is why I stopped chasing score years ago. 4 on each front (rare to see mature length on Shiras fronts), deep palms. Good points- looks like at least 10 per side. Will he be big enough to net for a "book"- most likely. I know is he scores a 10.

That's a dandy for sure. Thanks for sharing. After finally drawing a tag this year, I could only hope to see one like him.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-21-18 AT 06:49AM (MST)[p]30Hart has this bull pegged pretty well. I would agree that the bull's paddle length is a bit shy for a super high score....but still is an incredible bull. There's no doubt he will easily make awards and should make all-time B&C.

One word on paddle length not mentioned above is that paddle length is measured from the cut in the tine on the back of the palm the entire length of the palm to the brow fork. If there is only a fork on 1 antler (spike on 1 or both sides) the palm length ends at the main beam. Palm length when doubled (for each side) is the largest chunk of a moose's B&C score. There are hardly any bulls in the B&C book that have a spike brow on 1 or both sides. That tells you how important palm length is! The bull I shot a few years ago had brows that forked way out (12" from the main beam) at the tips of the brows. This may be something to consider when judging moose.

My bull had that exact problem. He had only 1 browtine on one side which kept him from all time B&C (easily made P&Y and B&C Awards). He was a big and beautiful bull so it made no difference to me. Heck, at the time I didn't know hardly anything about scoring one and didn't care.

Depends where it's located. Some of us on here don't know where schoolhouse is from. Reading the op doesn't say if it's in Canada, Alaska or the lower 48. Reading further, seeing it's a Shiras moose makes some sense and leads me to believe it's in Utah This isn't supposed to sound negative, but this isn't a Utah only website. It would be helpful if everyone would say what state they are talking about when they post something like this. Again, this is off track and I don't want to upset you schoolhouse, just asking for more info next time.
