Heading to 61 to scout elk mid sept.
I've never been there and want to be prepared when I cash in my points.
I was just wondering if most people hunt this from a road camp or hotel it somewhere? I see campgrounds up on divide road can u get fresh water there?
I see some small towns west side of the unit. Do any of those have fuel or supplies?
Thanks in advance

LAST EDITED ON Aug-12-18 AT 09:17AM (MST)[p]Hunted if 4 times for deer and elk. Always camped on the mountain. Never on the divid road in a camp ground though. Yes Nucla and Naturita have fuel, groceries and also a hot shower at the motel. Some great people also!!!?

Theres a wonderful spring at Columbine campgrounds. The water is state tested. Its a great place to camp or you can camp just about everywhere if privacy is your goal. It is about as dry there as its ever been. You can learn the area and terrain but game and sign will be scarce.

61 is absolutely burning up right now with no end in sight. It will probably cross into 62 before long. There is currently 20 miles of divide road closed.

We stayed on the mountain and that's what I would suggest if it's possible for you. Travel time off and up the mountain will eventually hurt you in my opinion. We used the butcher between the two towns( can't remember the name)and were very happy with the outcome. You shouldn't have a hard time finding elk it's finding the one you want. Great idea to get a lay of the land.

Thanks jbt
Thanks for the water tip.
Ya I did hear how dry it is. Dang it.
My plan is to learn access and just have a clue where to start when I draw. Driving 1000 miles so need to relieve some anxiety of drawing a tag in an area that I know zippo about.

You can rent a bed in the bunkhouse and get a shower at Weimer?s cow camp on The Tongue assuming it doesn't burn up.

Just pay for a show. No need to rent a room. They have two showers in common area upstairs. $4-6 bucks was all. And you can grab a burger and malt across the street at Blondie's before heading back up the mountain.

I didn't know that mountain was on fire. The whole country is!!! Hope they control it. Myself, wife and three boys are sitting on 12-23 points for elk in 61. Wife and boys all have enough points to drew deer 12-15. Last years deer hunt was tough as we know it would be, so not sure what to do with deer points for sure. However, I have been on this unit four times hunting and know the unit some what, which is a big help.

Hope the fire is stopped and then see how things pan out.
