Hunting-Hiking Boot breakdown Warning

I was hiking when the Vibram soles fell off my lightly used Lowa boots. The material between the soles and the Goretex booty disintegrated. Fun walking out without soles. Lowa?s warranty policy states that sole separation is normal and ?Sole Units will degrade when your footwear is used only occasionally and is stored for long periods of time? caused by a process called ?Hydrolysis ? and occurs faster in the closet than when in use. WHOA !. Better check a boots warranty policy before you buy. Many hunters don't use boots regularly and hang on to boots for many years. Think about being way back in rough rocky snowy country with boot break down. Painful - possibly deadly. Please pass this along to hiking forums.

Ya!

For that kinda Money You'd think they could make a Boot that Lasts!

Rather it's being used or not!

I know so many people in so many places
They make allot of money but they got sad faces

It Ain't Easy being Me!:D:D:D

Unimpressed with Lowas... bought some at REI garage sale of returned gear. Very new for about 1/2 price. Seemed good on short hikes but painful in upper heel of right boot on long and vertical hikes. Keep trying , and failing , to think i got a deal!

Bought some lowas last year. Gave them a fair shot and every wear seemed to get worse. Put them in the back of the closet, got a pair of zanberlin and haven't looked back.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-18 AT 09:50PM (MST)[p]I bought my first pair two years ago and have put many miles on them. I guess I'm the only one that has been satisfied so far. I have boots that cost 6 times as much I like also but for the money the Lowas work well for me and very comfortable.

I loved my Lowa GTX Extreme's so much I bought another pair for when they wore out. but they won't wear out.

I've worn them for 8 years now on numerous deer and elk hunts, a sheep hunt and 8 long seasons of eastern OR chuckar hunting. which is the hardest thing on boots anywhere.

I have a pair of Kenetreks I bought for more insulation when I needed it. they're good boots but they're not Lowa's

I wear Lowas 7 days a week 365 days a year. No problems. I've also have not had a blister in years.

You have just got to find the brand that fits your feet. No need to bash a brand etc because they didnt fit you. It took trying a lot of different brands to find the one that works for me.

The original post is bashing the boot for the sole coming off, not because they didn't fit. Fit is definitely a person to person thing and each boot works differently for each person But we all should expect to have our boots not fall apart, and when a lightly used pair does fall apart, one is within their right to be a little grumpy about it.

I wore the Canada hunting boot by Mendel for years.. never had any troubles.. my last pair died last year and they quit making them so I tried a pair of kenetreks and to wear around they were comfortable and felt like good boots.. I went to the Yukon on a sheephunt and after day two I would have paid big money to have had my wore out Mendels..
Glad my guide had the same size of foot, he got a nice pair of unwanted kenetreks and I won't be buying anymore..
Wish Mendel would crack the Canada hunting boot back out..

You don't like vaginas?

So lm curios. How old are your boots?
Pretty much anything made of plastic and most adhesives have a life span?
And how would a company determine an expiration date?

I have had a pair of Lowas for my wildland fire fighting boots for two and half years only use them during summer months for fighting fires great boot for me and have not broke down during the off season.
I also just purchased the Lowa GTX Extreme for my personal use and I do not remember anything in the warranty about them breakingdown if you do not wear them often. I must have over looked that info.

Happened to me twice. First time was my first pair of Mendel Ibex. Second time was a pair of Cabelas extreme hunter boots. Mendel prorated their boots so I got a new pair for about $75. Cabelas didn't offer any help on their boots. I am using Zamberlains now. Boots can make or break a hunt.

I laugh and get mad at the same time when I see the weekly post ?where did your Kenetreks take you this weekend?. I Think I had one good pair out of 3. I've been wearing some Zamberlains for about 8 months now and I'm impressed. Super hard to break in for my midget feet but they are nearly indestructible from what I have thrown at them. I'll be trying them out for the foreseeable future I think. I really did like the kene mountain extreme 400s and I probably got 3 full years out of them but the other 2 pairs(mountain guide NI and older model NI mountain extremes) were less than impressive, espessially for 500 bucks. Their sole(not the vibram) is garbage and the overall stitching and water proofing sucks balls. Not a bad choice for walking down the lane or for Sunday boots I suppose.

Sit tall in the saddle, hold your head up high, keep your eyes fixed to where the trail meets the sky...

My experience has been the exact opposite of the original poster. I've owned a lot of boots and in my opinion Lowa makes one of the finest boots available today.

I've used and abused Lowas for years. I wear mine daily working year-round in the field. I put mine to the test with creek crossings, steep, rough terrain, wet grass, etc. The only pair of Lowas I had problems with was Lowa Renegades that came apart after several months of rough daily field work along the seams. I've had great results with Lowa Tibets, Caninos, and Vantage. The thing I really like about Lowas is they come in different widths. My feet prefer lots of room in the ball area of the foot.

My experience has only been with mens hunting boots. maybe their Subaru driver boots don't hold up I defy anyone to find a better lasting real boot.

Boot maker means less than fit. Get boots that fit your foot. Kenetreks have been good to me. I wanted a pair of Crispi's pretty bad. Couldn't make them fit. mtmuley

+1. On my second pair. Only thing that wore out on me was the pad inside and a little wear on the rubber around the toe from rocks. Still work great, but didn't have the 100% feel. Gathered another pair. I'm a fan. I even wear them in cow shiz and they held together. I was always good at washing it off though.

I dont know if Oboz makes hunting boots but their hikers are amazing. No loss of toenails after hiking down very steep trails . They keep your feet in the same spot.

Got off the phone today with Lowa C.S., its gonna take $125.00 hard earned bucks + shipping to get my boots to Lowa to resole my Lowa Tibet GTX boots that I resoled in 2015 and never even wore. They fell apart last week when I looked at em. C.S. said you need to wear your boots at least 3 times per month to keep them functional. First time it costs 85.00 to resole. Man that pisses me off!!!

I just took my Lowa boots on a recent trip. I had loved these boots because of their comfort and warmth. This past weekend however the sole separated (came off). When I asked Lowa if they could be repaired, their response was that boots disintegrate over time. Below is a quote from Lowa...

"Looks like your LOWA’s are showing hydrolysis or the natural disintegration of your polyurethane midsoles. Unfortunately, your boots are older and this disintegration process has started."

WoW I have cowboy boots that I worn when I was 18 and they are still going 40 yrs later been re soled 5 or 6 times

After a bit of discussion with Lowa C.S. They reresoled my boots for $65.00 since mine were never worn since it was resoled the first time. Also need to wear them several times per month per C.S. (The owners manual did not say that) I like the new job on the second resoling better and so far so good.

I have worn Lowa boots along time, two years ago I bought a pair and they felt sloppy and loose, I made them work for the season. I switched to Scarpa and the fit and function is outstanding
