Does anyone know a good source of information for a first time hunter that wants to hunt public lands in California I'd appreciate the help. No one hunts in my family I'm the first to ever want to haha.

GET A COPY OF THE CALI HUNTING & WILDLIFE REGS..............TONS OF INFO YOU WILL NEED TO GET FAMILIAR WITH. CALL GAME & WILDLIFE OFFICE & REQUEST A COPY.................YD.

I guess it depends on what kind of hunting your wanting to do. Deer, pigs, birds etc. Also what part of the state do you live? There is a lot of information out there, and you can probably get help on this forum if you're a little more specific. Try the California forum as well.

You might be "the first" in recent history, but if you go back only a few generations, everybody hunted! :)
Congratulations on getting the tradition going again. I know nothing about Cali hunting, but I wish you the best in finding help!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-11-18 AT 09:50AM (MST)[p]Plenty of public land in California open to all sorts of hunting all by your lonesome.

Don? t by pass the desert at or below sea level either.

Be sure and know the regs though.

>the state?

Northern California near Stockton I have already acquired my hunting license but the class did nothing more but teach me ethical things and safety. Not much on how to get started and most of the people in the room knew each hahaha

I guess nobody has a ?good source? of info. We mostly all learned from family so it seams obvious to just go into the woods and do it. If you are unsure of just taking a gun into the woods and getting after it by trial and error then you will have to find someone to tag along with. Quail season goes until Jan 27 and is a great way to get started with a shotgun. Good luck, it can be hard to find a stranger to take a newbie out.

#1. Move out of communist occupied territory.

If you want to know where to hunt, there is a lot of public land to the east of you in the Sierra's. There is also a ton of land to the west, all the way up to Oregon.
If you want to meet people that hunt, maybe go to a Deer Association dinner or Waterfowl dinner and meet other hunters.
If you want to learn how to hunt, maybe pay a guide and go on a pig hunt or bird hunt. I think a pig hunt is always a fun way to start, you can learn a lot, and have success.
It's been stated already, if you aren't afraid to go up in the hills and learn by trial and error, there are lots of places to go.
Good luck!!
