How many in the group can carry rifles?

I was thinking about taking up deer hunting in New Mexico, together with a friend. None of us has hunted before. Let us say only one of us has a tag for a given week. If the other person accompanying the one with the tag is also carrying a rifle, would a game warden consider they are hunting without a tag? Or maybe the wardens don't care how many people there are and who takes the shot, as long as the tag is attached to the deer? Thank you.

NEWBIE Hunter Might Fit!

I Don't Know all of NM Hunting Rules!

But I Believe Party Hunting has been against the Law/Rules for Quite some time in Most States!

This doesn't seem like a serious question, but just in case I'll give a serious answer. DO NOT carry a rifle in the woods without the proper license and or tag. Make sure to take the required hunters education course where questions like this are answered.

First Post !!! Dead of winter not much going on !!! A question that is a little off the wall !!! Somebody is bored !!! Lol :D

Hard to say if the question is serious or not, but it is a question might be interesting as to how states differ .

In Oregon you cannot hunt anything during a controlled centerfire rifle season unless you have a valid tag for that season. however, you do have the right to carry a rifle, even a centerfire as personal protection while walking in the field at any time.

You can carry a centerfire rifle and hunt any other legal species during a general season with or without a tag for deer/elk/pronghorn/sheep.

It would help if you don't look like a newbie! Try to blend in. Buy a couple of those bandelero type cartridge vests and wear them across you shoulders, sort of like this guy. And have beer in your hand, preferably a Bud Light.

I asked this same question when my oldest son wanted to accompany me on an AZ elk hunt, and help me pack it out when successful. I wanted to carry my in-line muzzleloader and he would carry my rifle as backup, if the animal was at a greater distance.

The email answer I received from the Chief of Enforcement for AzG&F was he certainly could carry it for me, but could not participate in the hunt and shoot, without a license and tag of his own. They had no problem, unless you did something illegal.

Also remember in AZ that some State Trust land requires you to have written permission to be on it and hunt. That written permission is acknowledged to be your state issued hunting or fishing license!

I see many uncomfortable conversations with game wardens in Newbie's future.

Seriously, from my experience in several states, the license is good for one person - the person's name on the license. Which means that person and only that person can shoot the animal.

I've run into some game wardens that would be hard to convince I wasn't hunting.

Yes, only that person can shoot the animal. but anyone can carry a gun in many cases.

If someone wanted to spend the time and money to fight it I think you could carry a rifle in any season anywhere. OR was facing a challenge to the existing law that said you could not, they feared it wouldn't hold up in court under the 2nd amendment so they backed down and changed the law to allow it.

You still cannot hunt anything, not even varmints during a controlled hunt. but you can carry a rifle as much as you please.

In Colorado you cant carry anything .24 cal or larger without a valid big game tag during big game season. And I'd recommend a small game license if your carrying a smaller caliber rifle.

So plinking, or target shooting, or the Second Amendment is suspended during big game seasons? Hmm. Who knew.

My thoughts exactly 1911!

May be beating my head against the wall but I would ride that one all the way to the highest court possible.

Catch me shooting someone's game, then ticket me. I'm fine with that.

Anyone can legally carry a rifle during hunting season or muzzleloader etc. You do not have to have a license to do so.

There are still places that allow party hunting, Iowa being one of them for gun season whitetail.

Many eastern moose tags allow a companion hunter with a combined limit of one moose for the two hunters. Depending on your background, it's not as crazy a question as it might seem on its face.

Some states have predator hunting 365 days a year, as longs as he has a license(not a tag) he should be able to hunt coyotes.

It depends how old you are, if your both over 80 years old, who cares both of you pack a rifle and just ack confused when the game warden rolls in.

if you are able to legally possess a firearm and are not a restricted person, it is within your rights to carry a gun while out hunting with someone who is the tag holder. coyotes and foxes have no seasons or bag limits and can be hunted year round by anyone who can legally own firearms. the burden of proof falls on the officer to supply sufficient evidence and prove intent if party hunting or other illegal activities are suspected. you don't need permission from anyone to carry a gun on public lands, so long as there are certain area restrictions, in Utah.

there are some technicalities however, like you cant carry a center fire rifle during the muzzleloader hunt if your group is hunting muzzy deer/elk/etc and you cant carry a rifle during the archery hunt if someone in your group is hunting archery deer/elk/etc...
