Well, this has already been an exciting season for me.

My season started on March 25th, 2010. I had a spring turkey tag for unit 091 in NV on the Utah border.

I was not able to hunt opening day, but was able to get out on the 27th and 28th to find a bird. On the 27th, I was not so fortunate to find any birds, but did find some sign. I talked to a local person, who was able to point me in the right direction. With only two days to hunt total, I was pressed for time, or I would have to come up for another trip.

On the 28th, I got up real early, broke camp, and pulled the trailer about 10 miles to an area a couple miles below where I wanted to hunt. I drove the truck in from there.

When I say this was on the Utah border, I mean it was ON THE UTAH BORDER!!

I took the truck into Utah to a spot that I knew was where I could count back from. I then turned around and went back about 200 yards, which just barely put me into NV.

I parked the truck, got out and waited a few minutes. I then lightly let out a purr on my slate call, and immediately got a response from at least one gobbler, who, as far as I could tell, was not far away. I grabbed my gun, a mouth call, the slate call, and a face mask and took off. I slowly worked into the junipers and purred a couple times getting responses each time. Then all was quiet!!

After a couple minutes of wandering around, I caught movement to my left! There went a bird running away from me!!

In trying to get set up, I actually walked past the bird.

No problem. I walked back towards the truck, let some things settle down, and called again. I immediately got another response from what I was sure were two gobblers. This time I didn't go quite so far or so fast. As I was walking in to get set up, I noticed one bird walking away at about 75 yards.

I then got set up and let out another purr on the slate call. This time I got another response from a bird about 50 yards beyond my sight. I had a clean shooting lane for about 35 yards and figured I was good.

I put the slate away, and popped in my mouth call. About 10 minutes of talking with this gobbler got him to come in. I could hear him close, and saw him working behind a tree about 45 yards off. He worked to his left, turned, and then worked behind another tree closer to me! As he cleared the tree in full strut, my bead was already on him!!

BOOM!!!

Dead bird.

This was my first turkey hunt, and came 6 years after my previous turkey tag. When I had that tag, I had a kidney transplant two days before opening day and was not able to hunt the whole season.

How sweet this hunt was!!

After taking a few pictures, I went to a friend?s house and measured the bird. He weighed 16 lbs, had a 5/8? spur and a 1? spur, and an 8.5? beard.

To my knowledge, this was also the first legally harvested bird from this unit, which made it even sweeter!

Now on to lion hunting, and getting ready for the fall hunts.

Here are some pictures of the bird, and camp where I was at.

And now for the lion hunting part of my life. I currently own 5 hounds that I use for lion hunting.

I have caught a grand total of 2 lions. My first one was Jan 3, 2009, and my second was December 28, 2009.

I killed the first tom, and let the second tom go.

The main reason I have low success I think is more of the way I hunt. I don't have a snow mobile, and just recently picked up a 4 wheeler which I am borrowing from a friend.

I hunt year round, though I slow down a lot during the summer months.

If there is snow on the ground, I only check a couple canyons for tracks and then park the truck and start hiking. I enjoy this type of hunting more, and I think it allows me a better chance to see the dogs hunt, and keeps their senses tuned better than if they were riding in the back all day long. That and I get in shape too!!

Hopefully the coming months will prove successful in finding game.

Some pics of the dogs hunting, and the lion I caught in December.

And now for the hooved critters.

My dad and I got real lucky this year!

We both drew area 6 ML deer tags as well as unit 061/071 ML cow elk tags here in NV. The deer hunt is Sept. 10-30, and the elk hunt is Sept. 16-30. We will have camp set up for a total of 12 days including set up and break down.

I had the same cow tag last year, and in 2005 had the same tag for unit 111, 112, 221, 222. I filled both of these tags with mature cows, and am looking forward to spending another September chasing elk with my dad.

This is his first year hunting elk in NV, so I am hoping he can get one!!

I am also optomistic with this year that there will be a lot of good bucks to look over!!

We will concentrate on getting our elk first, and then work on finding a decent buck.

Here is a picture of the elk I got last year, my dad and I together and the country we will be hunting.

We are planning some shooting sessions to get dialed in, and are also planning a couple scouting sessions this summer as well.

Well, it has been a while since I updated. I ran into computer troubles, and just recently got a new computer.

I went out on Father's day with my dad to scout a little. We didn't get the early start that we had hoped, but the weather was nice, and we got to see some nice country. No deer or elk, but we did see a few antelope.

Last Sunday, I went out with a friend exploring, and lion hunting. No tracks were found, but we did see some cool country.
