Redemption: The act, process, or an instance of redeeming.

Have you had one of those years where nothing goes right? Where all your preseason workouts and training go down the drain in less then 24 hours? When no matter how bad you want to try you can't? That was the theme of my 09 hunting season. 2009 was going to be "the year". The winter was not hard on the animals. The spring was wet. And the tags where in my pocket. Yes sir 2009 was the year it was all going to come together on the season of my dreams.
Hunting season starts in January for me.

This is when I lay down the plans for the next eight months of nothing but getting ready for August 1st. This preseason was like non other I had done before. You could say I took my training up a notch. 50+ mile bike rides in 100deg weather. Long hikes with loaded packs in the heat of the day. My theory is if I can stand the heat when I train I can take it when I hunt.

As June came around I found out I had been successful in the draw. Now the plans are set. I already know where I'm going it's just a matter of when.

July 29 2009:
I had just gotten back from a little vacation. This was my rebuild week. The week where you let your body get ready for opening day. I had the feeling I was going to get a cold. Ahh the heck with it, it's time to get the backpack loaded and hit the trail!

July 31 2009
My backpack is loaded with 10 days of gear, my bow, oh yes and for safety I also brought my hunting buddy along with me.

It was 5:00AM, we had a 12 mile hike to get to where we needed to be for opening day. At about 6 miles in, what I thought to be a cold was not feeling like a cold, it was starting to feel like the flu. When we hit mile 10 I could hardly breathe. It had gone into my chest and was playing hell with my lungs making it hard to carry the 58lbs pack on my back. As we made it to our camp site for the night so did a storm that had been cooking up all day. Tent's up and I'm literary passed out 2min later.

August 1 2009
Opening morning is the day we wait for. The day that we can finely see what the mountains have in store for us. It's opening morning at 9:00am and I'm just now trying to get some breakfast in me. My head is spinning. I can hardly breathe in the mountain air that I love so much. When I stand up it's all I can do to keep me from falling over. 12 miles back on opening day I'm sicker then I've ever been before. As the thermals start to rise, the pack goes back on and it's back to the truck. Some of the trail I don't remember. But what I do remember is how good it felt to make it back to the truck. Once inside I was out again.
Ahh yes home. The last place on earth I want to be this time of year. And here I am,in bed, on drugs, coughing blood out of my lungs. What a way to start my 09 season or in this case end it. What I had was a form of the Swine flu. Knocked me on my butt! If you've had it you know! Two weeks after opening day I'm starting to think about trying it again. That is on till I do anything, witch would find me gasping for air. My lungs where gone. All the hours I had spent getting them ready and now there gone. I had no wind left. But I would not give up yet. After those two weeks of hell I did try it again. But nothing to great. It came down to some road hunting. My deer season was shot. But I still had a cow elk tag left.

What a joke that was! When you can't even hunt deer what makes you think that you can hunt those long legged things they call elk! 5 more days of trying to chase elk and my 09 season was over. Did I have fun? Yes. Do I wish I had not gotten sick? Yes. Can I change it? NO!

This year I have drawn the same two tags I had in 09. It's my goal this year to put a hole through both tags.
Fallow me in my 2010 Hunting season for a quest in "Redemption".

First scouting trip

July 3rd.
This is the weekend of the first scouting trip of the year. Not only is it the 4th but it's also my Birthday. This gives me a chance to get away and hit the hills when everybody else is watching fire works. This year was much like ones past. Snow, few bucks and some rough country. With the late spring we had here, the bucks are a little behind as far as growing goes. Witch means I'll most likely not be hunting them opening weekend.

Now if your like me. I don't have time to sit here and read every thing that comes across the form. As me, I would rather look at some good pics instead of sit here and read for a half hour. That's my goal for you folks here at Monster Muleys. Get you the info you need to stay up to date. But most of all give you something to look at!

July 10th scouting!

This is my second Scouting trip of the 2010 season. I choose to head into a new basin I had never been in. For never being there before, I thought I did pretty good.

20 bucks and 10 does! I posted a Vid of the biggest ones. So be sure to check that out as well! Also please forgive me for I'm still working on the whole making of videos thing. I hope to scout for deer every weekend till season (Aug 1). But before I hit deer I'll try my luck at my cow elk tag. So stay tuned for those pics and story. Also I have a antelope scouting trip planed for my buddy in the next few weeks!

July 17th scouting

This weekends scouting trip was a classic example of why you should scout. That way you have an idea of what's there before you get to your season. Am I saying "you have to scout!"? No. But it is a good idea to try and see what's there before you burn up your time in the hunting season looking for gosts. I spent about 12 hours behind the glass this weekend and could not even turn up a buck big enough to take pictures of, for you all to see. But here are a few pictures. Better luck next weekend!

P.S.
I did see a few Himalayan Snowcock! And a big Billy! I would say he was around 9-10 inches. Anyone have a NV goat tag? lol

This weekend was loaded with everything but sleep! I think I got around 3 hours of that part. Between the coyote who thought I would sleep with him and a rock in my back. Oh and to top it off a moon so bright it looked like noon at midnight! But it was all worth it! Found a descent buck. What do you guys think. Shooter or no?

Opening Day

3989opening_day_006.jpg

Well Opening day came and went here in the Silver State. I had one day to hunt till I had to get back to work. So I made the best of it! I packed in early Saturday and got set up. Sunday morning (AKA opening day) Turned out to be a good one. I put the 44mag to bed and made a stalk on him. I was closing the gap yard by yard, when he got up an hour and a half early for his morning bed change. At 72 yards I froze. As his rack came up from behind the rocks my heart started racing.

But as you can see I don't have any pack out photos. So you can guess the rest! Hopefully next week!

The off week

Everyone has been through it. We have all been there. Everything is going good "till". Till we hit the off week. The week in the season where nothing goes right. Till we hit a point where it feels like nothing is right. This week I gave my cow elk tag a shot. How did is go? Well, bulls, bulls and more bulls.

Why is it when your hunting one sex you always see the other? Then on top of that, I woke up and could not turn my head! I slept wrong and could not come to full draw the next day. Such is life. Sorry no kill shots this week. But I do know where there are a ton of bulls!

As the sun turned the Ruby's red on September 5th. My 2010 big game hunting season came to a close. It was a season full of hard work. Meany miles were put on the boots looking for that one buck. It was a season full of good times. This was also my hardest season to date. I had been hunting that Mountain every weekend since July 3rd. Now that it's over it will live in my mind for all times. The mistakes I made will be there for me to remember. The chances I had will make me train harder. But most of I learned from them!
This was a learning season!

Lesson #1
Never give fatrooster a chance to have his pic taken!
