I never thought there could ever be a scenario where I missed an entire big game hunting season without being able to going out once, but last year I had to endure that pain. I took a new job as a law enforcement officer in which the academy that I had to attend was in Georgia, lasting from July-November. By the time I got back there wasn't a tag to be had. I couldn't even get a doe tag! As I approach my first full year in my new home state of Montana I have been working diligently planning and scheming for the upcoming season.
Montana's big game draw results won't be out for a few more weeks, but each and every species that this great state has to offer has my name in the applicant pool. Now all I need is a little luck!
The one tag that I do have secured for this year is a North Dakota Archery Mule Deer tag. The season opens Sep. 5th and all the way through Jan. 3rd! The Montana draw will dictate which time frame I will focus in North Dakota.
The first hunt of the year will hunting Archery Antelope in Montana starting Aug. 15th, but before any hunting can be done, scouting is definitely top priority.
Here is a few pics of a mid-April camping trip in North Dakota on a quest to find some country to focus on for the upcoming Mule Deer hunt.

Looking at a couple of Mule Deer through the bino's. Obviously in April they were all "skinheads", but it was nice to see a substantial quantity of deer in that country. The puppy in the background is my Brittany and he's gearing up for his first upland season
The country doesn't look like the typical alpine Mule Deer country I'm used too, but results don't lie, and this rough dry country definitely holds some deer.[/img]
