Flight Costs/Recommendations

To those of you who have been to Africa.......what are some flight recommendations/costs???????

I would prefer to fly with a reputable company and have heard some horror stories on trips to Africa.

I will be flying from SLC to South Africa the end of April returning the first week of May.

I am seeing some flights for about 1700.00, is this about what you should expect to pay???

Johannesburg is your final destination in South Africa? If so it's an easy trip!

Delta flies direct from Atlanta to Jo'burg daily...it's a long haul, about 15-ish hours, but it's non-stop and simple as can be. Lots of direct flights from SLC to ATL as well, so it's no problem.

I flew that exact route in May 2010, tickets were right at $1,500 a piece.

Good luck!

Go Delta! Fly to Atlanta and then direct to Jo-Berg.

Do not be talked into taking layovers in order to save a few hundred bucks. The direct flight is the only way to go IMO. Plus, there is a less chance of lost luggage and/or guns.

The flights not fun, but worth it when you get there!

I've flown both SAA and Delta. Out of SLC you can occassionally get really good deals on Delta. I expect to pay about $2,000, so $1700 is a good deal. The best I have every found was a $1200 flight several years ago, and the most I ever paid was about $2400 for a coach seat.

Truth is, either SAA or Delta will do a good job, or about what can be expected these days. If you have miles and can upgrade to first class, then definitely do it. Cattle class on either airline is not much fun. I agree with the above recommendation, take direct flights if at all possible. You will have to stop on the east coast (Atlanta or D.C., most likely), but don't get a flight that has stops once you leave the US. Much more chance for problems with multiple stops.

Almost all the horror stories have at least some component of the traveler contributing to the problem. Have your paperwork in order (passport, form 4457, etc.) and don't try to take the kitchen sink. Pack light, and arrive at the airport early

Good Luck,

Bill

+1 on the Delta through Atlanta. Flew this year with United/SAA through DC. Would have been worth the extra 200 to fly through Delta, to avoid the 7 hour layovers.
