For those that have hunted s. africa what would you opinion on the best month to hunt plains game be? and why?

The real answer is "It depends-"

Early Season (April/May)-Still can be quite warm in daytime, with possibility of snakes. Kudu rut going on and see a lot of bulls. Hard to spot and stalk with a lot of kudu cows watching, and still very green. Possibility of rain and muddy roads, or mosquitos if in a malaria area. Animals not disturbed or pressured yet.

Most Popular (June/July/Aug)-Cooling off, drying out, and very pleasant hunting weather. A lot like our Fall hunting seasons at home. Great time for families, and photo opportunities great with beautiful weather and sunrise/sunsets. Lots of animals everywhere. Leaves clearing off some types of trees, and good visibility. Airfare highest at this time.

Late season (Sept/Oct)-Warming back up again, very dry and game concentrated on water. Good deals from outfitters still looking to fill schedules and lots of reduced price opportunities at left over quota.

June, July and August during the dry season.

Different species are better at different times.

I have never had anyone that has been there for plains game that June, July or August is bad.

I was in S. Africa where it had not rained in July in about 35 years and we got poured on for a day. Go figure.

so what can i expect during may 10-24 timeframe? what animals will be in the rut and what are typical weather conditions?

I've hunted there twice in May. First, we have to discuss "where"? Africa is a pretty big place.... Kind of like asking what to expect for weather in May in the US. Montana weather is a bit different, usually, than Arizona!

I will assume you mean RSA, or South Africa. Even there, there are regional differences. In the Limpopo region expect pretty cool nights, with daytime temps in the 70s. Very pleasant most of the time. It did snow on me once in Jo'berg in May, but was still mid 50's by afternoon.

Vegetation is generally still very green, making the bush fairly dense. Again, kind of like hunting the US in the fall before the leaves fall. A lot easier for the game to hide, but also the game is generally more relaxed. The rut for kudu and impala is probably on, depending on exact area.

Talk with your PH. I always go in early to mid summer because I have too much other hunting going on in the fall. Enjoy!

I have hunted Africa at one time or another in every month except December.
It all depends where you are going (Africa is big) and what you are planning on hunting.

Oh yeah, there are 5 of us going to several spots in Namibia this year and we'll be there May 14-30th. Read my hunt report on June 1st, and I'll talk about it! :)

my ph says well be hunting mostly the limpopo area, i booked may for that same reason, around turkey and big game here in the states. i cant wait. i hope to get first pick on the animals and not last also with earlier dates?

We always leave to Africa the last day of May. For no other reason than you can save over $ 300.00 on the flight.

$300 per flight? your full of crap! may flights are around $1200 right now and july flights are around $2400 each. I have almost enought sky miles for 1 first class round trip ticket and those things have a $5000 difference! Those can be potentially huges savings! as for me, I say the best time to go is on short notice in november to January. if your on the right hunting site the top outfitters are throwing hunts away at rediculous prices in order to meet quota but you have to be able to leave on short notice.

He said he can save $300 per flight not get the flight for $300.

Which forums are you watching for discounted hunts? I always watch the AR forum and a good friend of mine recently booked a elephant hunt through there.

Always looking just wondering where to check.
