Africa Tiny 10

I had not really thought much about or heard about the Africa Tiny 10 until I was over there. Now they are a real priority for me. I was lucky and shot a very large Brown Bush Duiker and a great Cape Grysbok.

I would really like the others that go with it as well.

A buddy of mine just watched my Africa DVD and said he has zero interest in any of that small stuff.

I just saw a life size Klipspringer and it is awesome.

I really want my life size Vaal Rhebok as well.

What are you thoughts on the little animals?

A list of the Tiny 10

Damara Dik-Dik
Blue Duiker
Common Duiker (Gray or Bush)
Red Forest Duiker
Cape Grysbok (Southern)
Sharp's Grysbok (Northern)
Klipspringer
Oribi
Steenbok
Suni

Many people have no interest but I really enjoy them.
Blue Duiker was alot of fun. We would hole up in the middle of the thickest jungle around and wait for the dogs to push one past. It was like pass shooting Ducks in the middle of a jungle.

They don't do much for me. Looks like shooting rock chucks with spike horns, and not much to eat. But everyone to their own?

i shot a duiker and a steenbuck before. i shot both with a 200 gr nosler ballistic tip out of my 338-378 wby mag at 3800 fps. i just wanted to see them explode. i told the blacks they could have whats left and we kept hunting. i view them as rabbits. on our last safari my ph wanted me to shoot this 7" duiker awfully bad. when i pulled out the ballistic tips for my 338 again he got pissed and refused me the shot. instead he handed my wife the 223 and she shot it. i just laughed at those two bafoons n i stilll do.

Huntmaster, I felt the same as you until I was there and hunted them. In most cases they are harder to hunt than the big species. Now I have my feet wet with a Grysbok and Duiker, I will keep after them.

I shot the Duiker and Grysbok both with a 300RUM, 180gr Accubond. I held mid cavity and had very little damage.

On my first safari, I had 3 of them on license and really didn't care if I shot any of them or not. However, after a few days of hunting in the Deka Safari Area of Zimbabwe, taking those little buggers became a priority with me. In the end, I did manage to take a good Bush Duiker, a great Sharpe's Grysbok with 2" horns and best of all, a heavy Klipspringer with horns over 5". On my 2nd safari, I took another nice klipspringer but missed a really good duiker. 3rd hunt, I did not take out licenses for any little guys, and was really disappointed as I ran into many steenbuck in the Kalahari.

If anyo of the little guys are available on future hunts, I'll always have them on license, they're a blast to hunt. Of course, not everyone 'gets it' when it comes to these little antelopes.

I know that unless I hit the lottery I have a much better chance of collecting the "Tiny Ten" than I do of collecting the "Big Five". Right now I have the Vaal Rhebok, Steenbok,Red Duiker,Common Duiker.I saw Klipspringer during my Vaal Rhebok hunt and Oribi and Blue Duiker while in Mozambique but failed to bring them home. Maybe on my next trip when I take my son.

I am Headed over in 5 weeks, I may change my mind then. One benefit is the taxidermy bill has got to be about 15 times cheaper:)

I wish my taxidermy bill was less. Lots of detail goes into those little animals. I life sized most of them because of their size. Even a shoulder mount Duiker is not cheap. Good luck. Post pics when you get back.

I sure enjoyed seeing the Duiker and Steenbuck when I was down there. I shot an average Steenbuck and a good Duiker. I never really cared one way or the other when I shot the Duiker. Our PH was excited about it.... I will probably never shoot one again.

I actually had my Duiker and Steenbuck prepared for a life size mount. I will probably pass and apply the $$ towards my next hunt.

It all comes down do different opinions, of different hunters. There is nothing wrong with either. I just got more excited about the bigger plains game....

KevinP, just do shoulder mounts of Woodruff's little species and charge him the life size price. He won't mind.
