hunting banned in botswana

I was told this was going to happen. The elephants will destroy that country. Very sad.

What a bunch of idiots!

The whole problem (obviously), is the "new" leadership in the countries.
Botswana is one of the few African countries with a growing economy.
Then, they do something like this to destroy it.

An elephant hunt is one of my dream hunts.

I am totally ignorant of the African hunting scene. I saw stinky's post in the other section.

What do you mean the elephants will destroy the country?

First thing that came to my mind was that poachers would kill everything. I guess I assumed hunting dollars helped pay or fund anti-poaching activities????

most likely both will happen. My guess is that the concession areas that the safari companies control will be over run with poaching. Most of the animals will die off from this. I guarantee the plains game will definitely suffer. However the elephants may be protected as the government definitely has the funds to do it and the okavango delta is where the majority of elephants go. The government only has to enforce antipoaching in selected areas to save the elephants which it may do. The elephants in return use their sheer wieght to knock over trees and eat their bark. In areas where elephants over populate the regions have been deforested. Elephants over time turn jungle areas into desert wasteland. Botswana is estimated to have an elephant carrying capacity of about 100,000 elephants. As of now there are around 180,000 elephants in botswana alone. Now you severly limit elephant hunting and you are about to have a huge problem.

My PH and another friend said that there are so many elephants as Stinky stated that they will destroy the country and what the poachers don't kill the elephants will destory their habitat. Sad for everyone.
