Madubula Safaris Hunt Report
Country : South Africa, East Cape
PH: Vlam Myberg

I am just back from a 10 day hunt in South Africa with my wife. This trip was our 30th anniversary present to each other, and we hunted together the entire trip, 2x1 with our PH Vlam Myberg. This was my 8th safari in Africa, but I hadn't been back to South Africa since 2002. I've also hunted Zimbabwe and Namibia in the past, but returning to South Africa was great.
This was a relatively low key plains game hunt, with a few new species on our list, but mostly just a chance to enjoy hunting animals we have hunted previously. I can't say enough good things about Madubula and Vlam Myberg. An absolutely first rate group, who had things well organized and executed throughout the trip.
We hunted in the Baviaans River Conservancy, and absolutely huge free range concession in the Winterberg mountains. I had hunted this area briefly on one of my very first trips to Africa many years ago, and it was a pleasure to return and spend more time in this region. The terrain is somewhat similar to the mountains of the Utah, Colorado and Montana with some really steep, mostly open hillside with thick, heavily vegetated canyon bottoms. A few pictures will give you a better idea.

There are active cattle and sheep ranches throughout the conservancy, but these low fences have little impact on game movement. The conservancy is over 220,000 acres, and the photos show only a tiny fraction of the area.
Overall, we took 8 animals. We used two Kimber rifles, one in 30.06 and the other 300 win mag. My wife shot the 30.06, and I shot the 300 predominantly, although I ?borrowed? her 30.06 once.
On to the pictures?.

The Red Lechwe was one of our target species for this hunt, and my wife made a great shot on this beautiful animal.

A zebra was also on her list, and will make a great rug in our trophy room.

A caracal, or lynx, was at the top of my list for this trip.

I'll post a few more pictures later. The East Cape is a great hunting destination for a first safari, or even for the safari veteran. We had a great trip.

It is worth remembering that it is winter in the southern hemisphere. While much of southern africa still has pleasant temperatures at this time of the year, the Winterberg mountains lived up to their name with some cool weather for South Africa. Temperatures ranged from 40-60 F most days, and one night we had a bit of snow on the high peaks. We had two days of rain on this trip, which is a bit unusual, although not exactly uncommon either. As we moved toward Port Elizabeth and the coast we had a couple afternoons approaching 70F, but certainly not hot. We were prepared and had no issue, but did meet one couple who arrived to hunt the area with little more than shorts and short sleeve shirts. I hope they are tougher than me!

Here is a bushbuck taken on one of the rainy days.

The red hartebeest required the longest shot of the trip, which was 348 yards off the shooting sticks. One shot from the 300 win with 180 gr Barnes TSX bullets was sufficient.

This is the private guest house where we stayed most of the trip. The trackers and PH are shown at the Landcruiser.

Again, we had a great trip with a first rate PH and Outfitter. What a great place to spend time hunting with your spouse.

A big congrat's to you and your wife's 30th anniversary.

What a great report. That caracal was and one of the top animals I'd love to take. I had my chance down there and blew it.

What plains game is harder to take? I would bet there isn't one.

Great trophies. I would love tohunt the mountains like that!

Looks as if the PH & Trackers are wearing heavy Clothing?

I take it,it's not because it's Cold?:D

To keep that Sharp Crap in Africa from removing your Hide I'll bet?
