Jeff:

Glad to hear all is going well. So what species have you taken so far other than the elusive gray ghost? Seen an big black giraffe stink bulls? I sure hope there is one with my name on it.

Very excited to hear more from you and see pics.

Reply when you can, enjoy and travel safe.

Justin

Justin,

While I was in camp @ Kanana I saw where you'd pulled the trigger & booked with them. You'll not be disappointed buddy. It was an awesome experience for me. I've followed your hunts & posts and I assured Jason that you were a great guy & that you guys would have a blast. He's a heck of a PH & a hoot to boot!

I'm recovering from a sinus surgery I had this morning plus I'm really behind at home in many ways, but I'll post a hunt report soon.

I will say that I went to Kanana on my first Safari hoping to fill my 10 animal wish list...
My expectations were greatly exceeded in every way. I hunted quite conservatively, in my opinion & ended up with all I wished for and much more.
I took a total of 22 animals while there, and every one of them are of great trophy quality to me.

I do not have one single thing to complain about concerning my experience there.
I'm going back next May (right before Tony) and can hardly wait.

I'll get to that hunt report complete with tons o pics ASAP.

Jeff

Jeff,

Congrats on a first safari and great safari. I was able to keep track of you a little bit through Claire.

22 trophies, Good for you!!! Cannot wait to see pics and here more about it. We depart on Sept 10th.

We are taking some camera guys and will be doing a promo video for Jason for the show season. Cannot hardly wait.

You laughed and cried tears of joy so much you had to come home and have sinus surgery. Good for you!

When you get time, let's see some pics and hear the story. Take your time and post as you can. No one sentence post.

You better have left an old stink bull and waterbuck for me!

Congrats. Glad you had a great time and are home safe.

How many hunting days did you have?

Justin

Justin,

Thanks man, you are gonna be there really soon, and you're makin' me wish I was still there. I've chatted with Jason almost everyday since leaving...

I hunted 10 full days. I'd readily go back with you & do it all again.
I only shot one Giraffe...
But I think I got the biggest Waterbuck on the entire 100,000 acres!
He's awesome to me and a big ole Waterbuck really trips my trigger.
There's plenty of them there though but you may have a hard time finding one better that I was fortunate enough to take. I was very selective in what I shot on all species & feel that it paid off with some exceptional trophies. The age class is there.

One thing you'll like about Jason is that when you make a good clean kill on a great animal, he gets just as excited and happy as you do. My Waterbuck & Springbok were especially nice & old and we celebrated grandly! The guy is a joy to hunt with & I tell him he was born to PH just like I was born to hunt!

Jeff

So let's hear the list. Giraffe, Waterbuck, Springbuck, and what else?

We have 11 hunting days. I promised myself I would never go back for under 10 hunting days.

Since you shot my Waterbuck you better have left my 60" Kudu there.

Were you the only hunter there at that time?

How was the weather? I am sure it will be hot in a couple of weeks but I know that is Africa and those animals don't care but I guess I care. I am a cold weather guy headed to a warm weather continent.

I am excited to actually meet Jason and Claire. I email them regularly. I am sure that Jason mentioned he wants me there and gone as I have emailed him and emailed him and emailed him some more.

Cannot wait to hear details and see pictures.

I was the only hunter on the whole place for the entire 10 day period. Spoiled me.
That was nice.

The weather varied greatly. A cold front came through and brought a couple of 28 degree night time low temps. Some days it was in the 90's. I loved it.

I took a Giraffe, Waterbuck, Eland, Impala, Warthog, Steenbok, Porcupine & Ostrich.
I also took 2 ea of the following: Zebra, Gemsbok, Red Hartebeest, Blue Wildebeest & Kudu.
and 4 Jackal.

kinda got off my chain, didn't I? :)

Good for you.

I would love to shoot a Jackal. I think they are a beautiful little animal.

I am still scratching my head on the Ostrich. Not sure what I would do with one if I shoot one. I know the feet are huge and would be interesting to display.

I would definitely take a porcupine if I got the chance.

Congrats cannot wait to hear more and see pic.s

Your list is pretty much what I am hoping as well.

Cheers,

Justin

Plenty of Blackback Jackal avail but ya gotta be quick. They don't hang around.
I'm making flatskins with a couple of big males.

The Ostrich was a blast! I thought he'd never stop moving for a shot but finally did & I connected with about a 250 yrd heart shot. I shot him mainly for the skin. They make a 4x4 foot skin that can be used for lots of things. I'm thinking a seat for my Harley would be way cool. With the huge feet, I'll make bookends for the Africa Hunting books that I intend to collect.

To be truthful, after experiencing hunting there, there's not too many species I won't try to collect I think. It seems that the more I do the more I want to. I dunno...there's just something wild and adventurous about just being there in that land. Hunting it just allows one to feel like an actual part of it I believe.

It looks like you too all the available species except a Black Wildebeest?

How are the quanity of animals? Lots of Kudu? Oryx? etc.

I really want a Giraffe, Waterbuck, Eland, Kudu (several), Oryx, Red Harbeest, Steenbok and anything else that is big.

I have not shot an Eland and by the trail camera pics it looks like they don't have a shortage of them.

Did you do any sitting on the waterholes or all spot and stalk?

I am very excited and the more I hear the more I am ready to go.

I passed on a couple of nice Black Wildebeest waiting on a monster. Hopefull I'll find him in May.
Honestly, the quantity AND the quality of the Kudu, Gemsbok, & Eland are astounding. I coulda shot a dozen big Gemsbok everyday. Big Kudu bulls are everywhere. The bigger Eland bull herds gave us the run around somewhat, but that is just hunting & they are there in great numbers. Zebra & Waterbuck are plentiful too. Heck, there's plenty of everything you're looking for there.
I only sat on waterholes the final day. That morning a big elevated rifle blind produced the Red Hartebeest bull that had been avoiding me & before we got down I took my second Zebra as well. It was a lot of fun but so were the 9 days of spot & stalk and sneaking up on waterholes. That evening we sat a bow blind in effort to spot a special Warthog we'd seen the day before but he never showed. We saw plenty of other game though, including a huge White Rhino bull. I really hated to see my time there come to an end. It sure feels good knowin' I'll be back in May!
Justin, you should be excited. You are in for one heckuva great time @ Kanana!

Jeff, you are killing me. Pics, pics and pics. I am excited and whatever we shoot we shoot. I am not worried about it at all. I just told Jason the magic number was 23. I needed one more than you. Just kidding. I just want to have a great time, see a bunch of animals and then let it play out.

Cody will be excited you left the big warthog behind that is what he wants more than anything. We are going to have a full camp. 4 hunters, 1 cameraman. But Cody and Erick will be together and filming each day.

We are doing to do a great promo video for Jason for the show season. It is one of David's specialities and I am excited to help Jason out in that regard.

I would love to see a wild rhino. That would be way cool. Definitely take a bunch of pictures then.

What are you wanting to pursue there next May?

Did you see any cheetahs or leopards?

Cheers,

Justin

Justin,

Yeah, just get out there everyday & enjoy yourself. You can plan what you want, but what comes your way is up to mother nature & she always seems to have a surprise in store for ya!

I look forward to seeing the video you guys make.
I did get a couple of kill shots recorded. They're sure fun to watch.

No Leopards or Cheetahs were seen but their sign was. They're there, but very secretive & elusive.

Not sure what all I'll go after in May but lots of the same plus a couple of other species that I have a hankering for.

Tony's hunt is right after mine, so I may hafta stay over to run interference during his trip!

I'm working on my hunt report & will try to throw up a piece of it soon.

Jeff

Excited to hear more. I really want on of those big old porpupines for some reason. Those quills on so so long.

I would like to luck into a Honey Badger one day but doubt that will happen.

We depart exactly two weeks from today.

I am excited. Two guys are going that have never been and I am way stoked to see their faces. To have my first day in Africa again would be unreal. It is such an amazing place.

I hope there are a bunch of critters that want to come back to Utah.

I am getting a few on the wall from last year and that is exciting.

Cannot wait to hear the hunt report and see pics.

Cheers,

Justin
