I am taking my daughter june 2013,I have talked to several people that have gone there. There are some reviews on bowsite.com as well

Thanks, I've read comments about them on Bowsite.com...looks like I'm going in 2013 also. I met a booking agent for them in San Antonio last night at a hunting show and a guy who hunted with them last month. He killed a 61" Kudo and was very satisfied with everything about the trip down to the folks they used for the gun permitting process. He took both a bow and gun. I'm trying figure out the best time to go, from everything folks have shared with me anytime is a good time to go. Some months are better than others for certain species and how you want to hunt. To me this is one of the best parts of the hunt listening to others and asking questions, planning and thinking through all aspects of the trip. Never dreamed I'd get to make a trip like this so I'm stoked...my wife is chomping at the bit to go too, I'm blessed! Thanks again

Given the choice I would always prefer to go in June and July as the weather is usually perfect and not hot. I am going in September this year and it will be hot but July is hard hard to beat.

Thanks Littlejoe...I'm checking on airfare and travel routes now as someone told me that flights are considerably cheaper before school lets out in the Summer and when school starts again in the Fall. Not sure if that will afeect my decision much unless there is a big difference in costs. Thanks again

There is a high. low. and shoulder season for airfares to Africa on SAA, and several other carriers. Airfares typically go up $100-200 on June 1, and you can defintitely save some money by flying the week before. As with all airfares, however, exceptions seem to be the rule, so it is worth checking. But the base rate does vary based on the travel month.

Personally, I would go when it is best for you. A couple of hundred dollars on a ticket will not make or break this trip. Just plan on the trip of a lifetime.

Just make sure your gun permits are in good order and that your passport does not expire soon and you can work the rest out as you go.

Thanks Little Joe, Llama Paacker and Habitat...just booked airfare without a travel agent for 5/7/13 from TX to Joberg for my wife and I for $3K including taxes/fees and travel insurance from United Airlines.
Do you guys usually buy additional travel/medical insurance from someone like Global Field Rescue or one of those types of medical insurance companies? I saved $700-$800 by booking through American Express myself for airfare and looked at what the limitations and fees were with their insurance and think maybe the 14 day additional medical insurance might be worth it. I have a good friend that was gored by an Australian Water Buffalo two yrs ago on some island near Australia so I know someone who actually benefitted from the medical insurance. He's in one of the "stans" hunting Ibex so I'll check with him when he gets back. Just curious on what you guys think.
Also I've had quite a few people tell me they have had great results when they stayed overnight at the Afton Guest House in Joberg and having them take care of all rifle permitting. They told me that they took care of all their firearms paperwork and they had thier firearms ready go in about fifteen minutes or so. I'm also looking at a couple of other folks on that process and don't want to cut any corners here. Went to Canada on a sheep hunt with a rifle last year and they were a real pain in the neck.
Thanks for all the help and conversation you guys have given on this thread and I look forward to hear what else you guys might add.
Take care

A few answers to your questions...
Global Rescue is one of the best for medical evacuation when overseas. A bit pricey, but if you travel a lot they are worth it, and very comprehensive coverage. When traveling into the remotest parts of Africa, I would not go without their level of coverage. Medjet is a similar service, but not quite as good, in my opinion. I belonged to Medjet for many years. In Zim, MARS service is available for very affordable rates, but it won't get you back to the states, just to a major hospital.

Afton House has a very good reputation, but is ondergoing some management changes with the death of the original owner. Still family run, and they can take care of you. Another well respected location is African Sky Guest house, with similar services. I try to avoid staying in Joberg when possible, as I want to hunt and not stay in a major city.Look at the Gracey travel website for lodging and gun permit info.

I recently used AIr2000, Hunter's support for firearm permits in RSA. Absolutely first rate, and even better service then I expected, which is always nice.
Good luck on your trip. Sounds like you got great airfare and May is a great time to hunt RSA.

Hey guys...trying to think through accomodations before and after the hunt. I looked at African Sky Guest House and the booking agent suggested Afton Guest House but seems to think that African Sky GuestHousew would be a god alternative (I've heard that Afton has sold and has recent new owners but haven't verified). I have also found the Africa Sky Guest House which looks to be more in town. I have read that that one of them is bit more outside of JoBerg and not in the middle of the big city. I would prefer to be out of town more as I have spent plenty of time in major cities (born in Madrid Spain, lived in London growing up and now for the last 40 years in S Texas...I prefer being out of the hustle and bustle)

BTW going on May 9, 2013 with Limcroma and would like to have all this part nailed down sooner than later.

Ant htoughts you guys have is always appreciated!

Hi Tony, we stayed at Africa Sky this past May and have no complaints. I cannot say whether or not it is right in town, but my impression was that it was not. We arrived at sunset, though, but the drive out the following morning was not more than 15 minutes.

The accomodations were great, the food even better. Diedre was our hostess and was charming.

However, this was my first time to Africa, so I have no comparison to make!

My daughter and I returned from Limcroma and there is nothing but good things to say about them. The PHs were great to be around the food is better than anywhere i have eaten before and the quality of game and lodging is top notch. My daughter ended up with a blue wildebeast, impala, kudu, zebra and I broke down and shot a impala and waterbuck

That's good to hear thanks for the report...I spoke to them at the DSC in January asked if I could re-schedule for 2014 and they were great about it and so my wife and I are going next year in May. Congratulations on you and your daughters success...if you get a chance post up some pics...they have incredible Kudu and Waterbuck from what I've seen. Did you guys bow hunt or rifle hunt on this trip?

Thanks again
Bret

I hunted with Limcroma in April. Great place, great food and wonderful people. Shot 8 nice trophies in 10 days both gun and bow. I would highly recommend them to anyone!
