Nyala Pics/Story

This is by far and away one of my favorites.

Before the trip started the Nyala was right at the top of the list with the Kudu as far as what I hoped to go after. To me the Kudu and Impala symbolize Africa but ever since I saw an Nyala I have thought they are totally amazing. I knew that if I ever got one, it would be a life size for sure. I am mesmerized by them.

We probably saw 100 bulls or so and just a few cows over the course of the safari. They are very secretive and seldom come out into the open.

One of the coolest experiences I have ever had was when we went into an area and spotted ten Nyala bulls that were all feeding in this 100 yard by 100 yard area. I had already shot this one and if we were not pursuing Zebra I was tempted to take another one as I think they are amazing and there were two really good bulls of the ten.

The Nyala like the rain unlike most other animals in that area. We headed into an area when it was lightly raining and Barry knew this long canyon always had Nyala in it. We went in there two different times and this time we were watching a few bulls feed across from us ranging from 200 ? 500 yards away. Barry did not see anything we needed to shoot and I was struggling thinking they are amazing and only 200 yards away and an average one was fine. Barry won't even consider average.

Finally this old bull walked into view and started feeding. Immediately Barry said he was a shooter and a very old bull.

I got set up on the short sticks and we ranged him at about 250 yards. He finally came broadside into a little opening and I touched the trigger again on the 30.06 that I was still borrowing. He was hit perfect, we did not know it at the time, and just stood there. I put one more in him again and had the very distinctive sound. On the second shot he took off running into the thick stuff and then my heart started to race if we would find him. I was not sure how good he was hit.

We got to the area and started to find the tracks and within 100 yards we found him. What a rush of emotion.

What an accomplishment for me. He is an ancient old bull that is worn down quite a bit but absolutely one of my favorites. He is amazing.

We found both bullet holes and they were side by side 2 inches apart. Both were lethal.

One thing I did find out is that they don't drag any animal anywhere. They won't jeopardize the hide in anyway.

They have a tarp looking thing, but much thicker than a tarp. They drag the animal onto it and then that is how it is dragged off the hill. It is completely enclosed in the tarp and nothing is exposed. I was quite impressed with that.
