If you have not seen the March issue of Sports Afield, you need to get it before it goes off sale. It is all about African hunting and has an excellent article about Tony Pennington's EPIC elephant hunt in NG41/Botswana with Cobus Calitz. Well worth reading.

Tony, you had the hunt of many lifetimes, it's all downhill from that one.

Wow. I saw pics on facebook on an outfitters website and noticed it was woodruff hunter so i logged into the africa section to get the story and i saw this article.

I havent been on here in a while so I'm surprised you guys remembered me. Yes that was an epic hunt and to kill an elephant bull with 90lb tusks definitely wasnt something i was expecting to do. It was a true blessing and im honord to have been blessed with such an amazing free range wilderness hunt in africa. I didnt really understand the full gravity of what i had done till i was offered $50,000 for the video in he airport only 4 days after shooting the elephant. Everyone in africa had heard of the bull and everyone was calling to talk about it. I had agreed to do the magazine article before the hunt in order to document botswanas last elephant hunt and bring awareness to the fact greenies got the hunt shut down. But when it turned into the largest elephant in africa being killed it added icing to the cake i did turn down the offers for cash as those memories are mine and the purpose of that hunt wasnt about being able to shallowly boast about shooting a larger elephant than anyone else.

I will stop my rant but gawd this thread brought back some good memories.

You'll never forget that hunt. Glad you finally got with a good safari operator over there and had the kind of hunt everyone dreams of. As you've found, there are plenty of really good safari operators, it just takes some digging to find them, and as with most things in life, you do tend to get what you pay for in terms of the quality of the hunt and experience.

What's up next?

Congrats Tony on a trophy of a lifetime.

LAST EDITED ON May-17-14 AT 02:27AM (MST)[p]i am currently in africa. i was hunting with ian again for the millionth time in my life it seems. i was here 4 days in kwa-zulu natal and he had 5 different cats on bait. i sat in the blind on day 4 for 2 hours and shot a leopard with a 17" skull weighing 190lbs on the industrial scale and was 8 feet long. i also took a 54" kudu with my bow, a 57" kudu with my rifle a 29"nyala, a monster blue wildebeas andabout a dozen other animals. of course i got to slaughter the baboons and vervet monkeys and pigs for free for bait. ive had a fun time and im ready to come back. ian has a couple more monster cats on trail cam. we just need to get lucky in the natal areas draw system. if he gets another leopard tag next year i will be back. he should get more than one hopefully

sorry, ian owns vdv safaris. one of the few guys i will hunt with. i ALWAYS shoot monster stuff with him.

btw caelknuts. im going to be flying in to california to watch one of my horses run in the santa anita affirmed stakes on june 6. if you live in that area maybe we can meet up? if not i will be back july 15 to run in the los alamitos derby. ive never been to california so i have no idea where those tracks are much less where u are in relation to them just let me know

Stomper...super great congrats on cat, let alone on a couple great kudu. If I killed a 190lb leopard it would weigh more than me, but you outweigh it by 100lbs. LOL.
