African Hunt

Africa, here we come.
Going to be going into Windhoek Namibia in June for a cull/mgmt. hunt.
Just reaching out to see if anyone has an idea or experience with this region. If so, any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks much.

Several of us on the forum have experience hunting in Namibia. Gives us a few more details on who / where you will be hunting, and it will be easier to give answers. Also, ask specific questions if you can.

Your question is a lot like saying you are going to Montana, "what can I expect?" There are huge differences from east to west, and Namibia has diverse habitat as well.

Congrats on booking the hunt. You are in for an incredible experience.

Kinda like flying into Dallas and wondering what the rest of Texas is like. I have hunted that area several times, from right outside WH, up at Erindi, to the Erongo mountains and up towards the desert conservancies and Etosha. You will have a great time.

Who are you going with, and where???

Excellent point. We are going to be hunting with Uhlenhorst Hunting Safaris mid June. Two of us will be focusing on cull hunting and one on trophy's.
One question I would have is about other hunting opportunities while we are there for potentially cow Elephant, Giraffe and/or Nyala that any members may have experienced.
Never been to Namibia and just looking to maximize the experience.
Thank you.

I would say elephant will not happen and any nyala there would have been raised to be hunted an cost more there as it is fairly new there still. You can do giraffe and may even be able to find a cull on them. You may really need to ask your outfitter more question.

Most culls will be oryx, red hartebeest , springbucks. If you get lucky maybe some zebra and female kudu and eland

LAST EDITED ON Mar-14-18 AT 03:24PM (MST)[p]I think you have made an excellent choice, and they have a very good reputation for providing good hunts. Several people from our SCI chapter have done hunts with them. There should be a lot of info available on the internet, YouTube videos, and either Accurate reloading or African Hunting talk forums.

As far as the hunting area, I believe they are a couple hundred miles south of Windhoek, so I can't speak for that personally. All my hunts have been up North. Should be an excellent area for kudu, several species of springbok, gemsbok, or impala tho, with plenty of cull opportunities. Once you are there and establish a relationship with them, you might ask them about going out in the evening for calling jackals. That is a fun experience, and southern Namibia is more typical sheep and goat country also. They may appreciate you asking about varmint hunts.

The chance for a cow elephant would probably be slim, in the peak of the hunting season. Most of the own-use or problem permits would be up North and towards the end of the season. Nyala would probably be put-and-take and be expensive ($3K).

Maybe a couple other people on here will be able to help out better.

If you are looking for Nyala, check out Bergzicht Game Lodge. I have not hunted with them so I can't give you any pointers in that regard but our group did go there for their cheetah excursion when we were there hunting with a different outfit last June. They aren't too far from Windhoek. They have several cheetahs that you can interact with. It's a great experience.

I did talk with one of their staff at the hunting expo last month and he seemed like a good guy. I was specifically asking him about nyala. I will be going back in 2020 and it is on my list. From what I can see, it's cheaper to not have to deal with having stuff shipped as two shipments or importing it into a country and then combining shipments so doing it all in one country seems more logical even if you are paying slightly higher trophy fees. I did not ask if it would be a put and take so you would definitely want to ask. Their pricing was a bit higher, I believe its around 3,500. I have their price list at home and I am just going off memory here. They also have red lechwe for the same price.

I've hunted with Uhlenhorst. I went on a trophy hunt vs. cull but in any event you will have a great time.

Lots of game, good food, great accommodations.

You will show up as a friend, and leave feeling like part of the family.

I could have taken giraffe, but chose not to. Kind of spendy and I wan't sure what I'd do with it if I got one lol!

I ended up taking 9 animals, all of which (except zebra which has no scoring mechanism) exceeded stringent Namibian Gold Medal caliber.

If it tells you anything, I'm looking at going again with them this or next year to fill out a couple of species I didn't take while there, and to take my son and let him experience Africa (and get some trophies and culls).

Feel free to send me a PM if you want more info....

Thank you for the responses.
Nyala are expensive at $4800 so it will wait. Anyone ever hunted for the Sprinhairs or Varmits at night?
Good luck to all in the draws and thanks for the input.
Regards.

Hunting spinghares at night is a blast. Something you really should make the time for. I don't do it often, kind of light jack lighting rabbits, but really unique. It is also great to go out and look for caracals, which are a big issue for most sheep ranchers.

Just be open to opportunities that present themselves. there are so many cool things you can do that it really is impossible to do everything in one trip. Soak up as much as you can, and enjoy your first trip. When you return, you can be a bit more focused, but for a first trip, just go with it.

I envy everyone going on their first trip.

I was in Namibia last year. I loved it! Hunted with Schalk Pienaar Safaris. Hunting Mtn Zebra in the Khomas Hochland mountains was amazing. So was hunting the flat land. Definitely a country I will go back too.
