I am looking into a Buff/Plainsgame or Buff/Hippo/Plainsgame hunt in 2013. I heard that hunting Buff in the swamps is awesome and you will see herds of 300+ on occasion. I was also told that the plainsgame hunting is great as well. Just wondering if anyone has been and your thoughts. I am not opposed to going anywhere but Tanzania and I just cannot afford the Tanzania price or it would be my first choice.

I haven't been yet, but I'm booked with Zambeze Delta for Nov. 2012. I will be after Buff with a bow and my wife will try with the rifle. We also have sable, waterbuck, bushbuck, bushpig, nyala,on quota and maybe a few others. We are going as our 10th anniversary and will head to Azura Lodge on Benguerra Island for a few days after the hunt to relax on the white beaches of the Indian Ocean. I talked to a bunch of different companies from Moz this past Jan in Reno, but Mark Haldane stood out. Good luck finding and booking your hunt.

Thank you. I will be do some researching on them as well. Buff with a bow; now that is intense.

Littlejoe, you have a lot of time, especially given the state of the world economy, so take your time, explore all the possible options, and be sure that when you select a safari operator, it is one whom you're 100% sure will give you the safari you're seeking. Mozambique has some great Coutadas (concessions) and quality PH's hunting in those coutadas. Figure out what you want to hunt as your primary quarries, and then focus on operators who offer those animals as primary species. Do your research on buffalo in the swamps. Many consider it a great buffalo hunt, but there are also a fair number of people who would not do that hunt again, based on what I've read. It's a good hunt, apparently it just isn't for everyone.

If you'd like some ideas on contacts for research, feel free to PM me.

CA, thanks for the input. I will be in touch. I am just in the ground breaking stages of research. I am a little nervous about trekking through the swamp and being wet and soaked the entire time but at the same time it sounds like a wild ride. Looking now so I can hopefully book in a few months to get the animals I want on quota. I am open to about anything at this point.

Every year at the Hunt expo in SLC there is at least one PH who hunts Mozambique - Russ Fields. He is from RSA, but has one of the concessions in Mozambique. I hunted with him in South Africa in 2002, and talk with him each year about Moz. A lot of folks from the SLC area have hunted with him in the past, and it sounds like he has some real nice Buff. Just a thought to consider as you do your research. You can talk directly with one PH from Moz. at the hunt expo in Feb.

Look up the African Hunting Gazette. They did a Moz issue a few months back that I beleive you can still read online. Alot of good info on different outfitters. When we head over in Nov it will be 100 deg. heat and the swamps will be getting dry. It will be spike camps in the marsh until the Buffs are down and then back to one of the main camps and solid ground for the plainsgame. According to the PH it will be no more than a few days for the buffs as once you find the herds you can stay on them. Sounds alot fishing you glass for birds then play the wind and herd movement.

You really need to go over to AR and check out Tim Herald's report on his just finished safari in the Niassa Reserve of Mozanbique with Kambako Safaris. He and two buddies had an incredible safari, that included all three of them taking nice buffalo, but even more impressive, all three of them took nice leopards during daylight hours. It's a report worth reading if you're interested in hunting Mozambique.

I hunted Mozambique with Zambeze Delta Safaris, the Haldanes, in 2009. Don't think about going, just go. It was the best trip I have been on. There is an unbelievable amount of game and the buffalo is a sure thing if you can walk in the swamps. They are also doing a forest hunt for the buffalo which they said is very fun. For sure get a sable as they are everywhere and affordable. I shot every species of animal they have there except and elephant and leopard. My hunting buddy shot the leopard while we were there and it was a big cat.
If you go make sure to get a hyena. You call them at night and that is the most fun predator calling I have ever had.
Also get all of the little antelope. The suni are thick and make a nice trophy as they are not easy to get in other areas of Africa.
