I just got back from NM. I killed this guy on the 2nd day. Shot at 509 with my 7mm wsm.

Sweeeeeet! Nice buck, great mass. I like it when the 3's fork in the back. Good shootin!!

That's a real nice buck, congratulations! I like that area, used to hunt the northern end of it when it was part of 15 and took some nice bulls from there. Never saw many deer up north, so I'm guessing you took this farther south.

No I was not in the Burros. We weren't to far South, we did see some bucks up North around the Apache.

My buddies deer from the same trip. He killed this deer at 1046yds with my 7mm wsm. He had never shot long range before, but I knew he could shoot. I dialed the scope in for him and he hit and dropped the deer with the 3rd shot. We were shooting across a canyon and the wind was blowing over 20mph. I had him shoot at a rock a couple times to figure the wind out then he let fly at the deer. The wind blew his first 2 shots wide but he corrected and the 3rd shot hit the deer in the spine behind the shoulder and it was game over. The bullet was in the air for 1.38 seconds. I watched the bullet fly through my spotting scope and knew it was good before the bullet even made contact. It was pretty awesome.

1046 & a 20 MPH Wind!

If that don't get your Ass Chewed on MM I don't know what will!

Great 23 muley!!
I was there for 1st hunt and didn't see any like that,or that I would shoot.
Did see a few great Coues bucks.

We did see quite a few good couseys. In fact we saw a couple bucks that I would call big bucks 100"+ type. We also saw a bunch of mule deer. On our best day we saw 8 bucks and 4 of those were 10 points. My deer was the probably the best deer we saw he was with a good 10point when I shot him that would have scored better, but I liked the mass of my buck. My buddy passed on a deer on day 4 that was better than the one he shot. He was being picky and had to settle for the one he got on the last day. Unit 23 has deer you just have to know where to look and take good glass. We spent hours glassing every day. I think there are big boys to be had if you are willing to put in the effort. There are some huge areas in that unit that nobody ever goes into. If I ever have a cousey tag I know where I am going for sure.

Looks like a fun hunt. Good for you guys.

I hear ya o2b.
Saw quite a few mulies, just not that quality where I was. Good number of does and fawns and dink bucks. But few people, which is always a plus.
Saw 2 coues bucks that could be in the 100" range.

This is an awesome post ! Great Unit 23 buck and story. Not many could make a shot like that.

There are very, very few hunters that should take that kind of shot, and it definitely should not be taken on a live creature the first time it's ever tried. If you're not sure the first shot is going to be quickly lethal with about 95% certainty, please don't take it. Move closer or pass on the shot. These amazing animals deserve more respect than that. Nice deer, though.

or just make sure you have plenty of extra cartridges to tighten up the circle.

I would not have attempted either shot if I had not had complete confidence in my equipment and my friends and my own ability. I fire more rounds at 1000yds every year than most hunters do at 100. I have seen my friend shoot enough to know that he is capable of making the shot with my equipment.

3rd shot looks like it hit the deer in the neck. 3rd shot. It does look like you have a nice rifle set up that is probably capable of that type of shot, and I wouldn't have issue with it if it had been you taking the shot with your extensive practice at that distance, but to just plop someone else down and have them take a crack at a live creature at a distance they have never before shot at is a little irresponsible in my opinion. I'm not trying detract from your success in any way; I just think this type of scenario should be discouraged, especially if it's never before been successfully attempted.

Just out of curiosity, I did a quick ballistics calculation with a 150 gr.,7mm WSM bullet with a .498 B.C., and the 20 mph wind drift is more than ten feet. I'm not saying the shot isn't possible; I'm saying it needs to be taken with more caution and respect for the animal. I'm glad it worked out and that you had a good hunt overall, but I don't think this should be the norm.

One of the most honorable things a hunter can do is pass on a risky shot out of respect for the animal. I have shot and lost animals before for one reason or another, and it severely taints the whole experience, and you can save yourself some regret if you pass on marginal shots out of respect for the animal you're pursuing. Killing is a part of what we do, but it needs to be done swiftly, effectively, and ethically.

I was shoot 160 accubonds with a BC of .531. The wind drift was 10.28' and the hold over was 22.54'. Our hold over was dead on every shot the wind was just a little tricky. I did not have a wind meter. The deer was hit in the spine. He had already been field dressed in the picture and his esophagus had been cut out.

Oh! That makes it better... lol :)
