Well I finally got it done. Archery hunting these things in the desert Is a challenge. Saw some big bucks along the way. The rut was winding down with bucks beginning to group up. Found this buck feeding around 8 in the morning, I was unable to get in close enough. He was the boss in a group of 4 bucks and 6 does. I watched them bed down in a draw and waited until the shadows crept in. My Dad had just arrived at this point and was able to watch what seemed like an endless stalk. I began my sneaky approach, wind in my face, but the odds against me with so many eyes keeping watch. The group had sepperated farther than I had expected and I found my self in the middle of the small herd when my presence was detected. They quickly moved out of range and 300 yards up to the top of the draw. I figured they cleared the top and would not be seen again that afternoon. As I began to work my way up the draw, which had little to offer in cover other that some natural contour, grass and very little sagebrush. I soon saw the rear end of the smaller 4x3, at 150 yards I was stuck until he fed up over a small rise. After what felt like an eternity he finally had dropped over and out of sight. Crawling and crouching I closed the distance to the rise he fed over. As I peeked over I found him broadside at 70 yards. Before I could shoot he began to feed away. I slipped up to the next piece of cover, I caught movement up to my right. I found a doe feeding around some bitterbrush. After a quick check with my binoculars I located the largest buck in the group feeding near the doe, 69 yards away. With a bit of cover I was able to close into 60 yards. As I peeked around the last bush to get a reading with my rangefinder his head popped up and his eyes fixed on my location. After a couple minutes he returned to feeding, I was finally able to relax from my frozen position with my range finder stuck to my eye. Drew my Mathews Drenalin, stood tall on my knees and took the shot I had played in my mind a hundred times before. The result of hours and hours of practice from May through mid November had paid off with a perfect shot. Upon my arrows impact the buck lunged forward and ran straight toward me passing within 10 yards and piled up 50 yards down behind me. All this unfolding as my Dad watched through his spotting scope from down below. I was now overcome with joy and exhaustion from putting a tough 45 miles through 10 days of glassing and stalks that didn't play out. All in all not the biggest buck on the hill, but I am happy to have harvested a mature buck. I can't wait until I get to chase Muleys again!!!

Nice archery trophy. I thought the hat was to confuse the deer. 😀

Was a lot of fun. Saw some bigger buck I just couldn't get in close enough. With them starting to group up again I decided I better get after this one.

When you shoot a first buck that nice with bow, you need a tall hat for your head to have room for growth!!!
Just kidding - great first muley buck! Congratulations

I have been hunting all my life, but only blacktails. What a different world these Muleys open up, I am hooked for sure.

Great Buck!

Seeing those dark horns with a yellow grass background probably got your heart pumping pretty good.
