Little MT 3x4 with my kiddo

Hi guys. So I picked up a returned MT deer tag late in the game and took my 9 year old son hunting for his first time with me. We ended up hunting around Kalispell and I thought we might run into a Whitetail as they are very dominant in the area.

Since I had my son with me I told myself I would prob shoot the first 3 or 4 point buck I saw as we only had a few days and we were in thick cover. We ended up getting this little 3x4 MD and he was the only deer we saw all day.

We decided to walk down an old skid road to try and be quiet. There was literally no deer sign anywhere, not one track on or even crossing the road. I literally told him a half hour before we got the buck that it only takes one second to change your whole season. Shortly after that conversation I looked down in the thick cover and creek bed and this little buck was staring at us. It was almost like divine intervention as my son had lost all patience and was throwing snow balls at me and trying to build a snowman every time I would stop to glass. LOL!

My son was super excited as it was his first deer hunt and we got one! We were in Grizzly and Wolf country so that added to the suspense of getting him out.

He reminds me often ever since the hunt that "It only takes one second to change your whole season." LOL :)

Merry Christmas and Happy 2017 to you all!

Dean,

Great time with the little one who is not so little anymore. It's funny that you posted and the first one to respond is one of my hunting buddies, Rick Manwill. Small world.

Great hunt with your son! That is a great picture also. Your boy will be able to look at that picture and remember the hunt for many years to come.

The critters have to win every time. I only have to win once.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-19-16 AT 11:41AM (MST)[p]That is great you got a hunt in and were able to put something in the freezer! And to have your son along is icing on the cake! Treasure these moments forever my friend. I remember the snowball fights with my son in Colorado and the time junior took the wheels off his skateboard and raced me down the mountain! He won and I was in a Duramax! That is what it is all about! Merry Christmas!

Thanks guys and yes great memories for sure! Having a euro mount done as my son wanted it in his room.

Yes Rich it is a small world at times! Alan I know those CO hunts with your son are some of your best hunts and memories!

Elk you might be right it might have been the last buck on that particular MTN? So glad we got to him first :) Montana has lots of critters so I think the population will survive!
