"Outfitted hunt? Where?"

Looking for a weeklong hunt offering a better than average shot @ a 160-190 class muley. Rifle only. Budget is 4-8K.
Give me my options concerning location as well as any outfitter recommendations.

Thanks for all replys

The only place I have done any research thus far is the Peace river region of Alberta. Just want to make sure there are not better options.

Eastern Plains of Colorado. Call Scott Limmer at Commanche Wilderness. You could probably even get a landowner voucher for $8K.
I think you have a lot of choices in your price range. Do you have any bonus/preference points in any states? Region G and H in Wyoming if you can draw the tag. Lots of private in Colorado where you could be able to get a landowner voucher and guided hunt for less than $8K. Call Huntinfool or Epic Outdoors, they should be able to provide you with some options.

No knowledge whatsoever about points or tags. Just want to kill a big framed mule deer. Live and hunt a lot in Georgia (and West Texas quail) so I honestly know very little about muleys or western hunting. Thus, I'm willing to pay for an honest outfitter in a area that holds Big muleys.

You could buy a landowner tag and guided hunt with trophy class outfitters in Colorado for under 8k. I hunted with them for elk and will be doing mule deer with them in the future

So many choices. Do you want to be on horseback in the mountains? do you want to stay in a tent, a lodge or a motel? I'm sure if you provide some additional details about what your dream hunt would consist of, that the good folks on Monster Muleys will be glad to help you out. Maybe put a more specific post in the Mule Deer Forum.

Colorado offers ranching for wildlife tags as well as landowner permits. As mentioned join huntinfool and ask for their recommendations. The eastern plains does have some big deer.

I do not think you are off-base in your research and consideration of the Peace River region. Some fine bucks come out of that area each year, and it should be within your stated budget. I hunted the Peace River on an archery hunt, and let an arrow fly the first evening of the hunt on a 189 typical.

Having said that, I prefer DIY hunts, and as others have mentioned, would look into a killer area and landowner voucher if it were me. Colorado would be a good place for that. Good luck in your search and hope you end up happy come this fall.

I hunt the Peace River every year. 2015 was one of the best years ever. 2016 was as tough as I have seen it. Tons of rain and the deer never left the river breaks because it was so green. I'm not sure that the canola got harvested at all.

You really need to do some research on what you are looking for. There are so many options, but each with some inherent risk.

Frankly speaking, a 160 mule deer hunt should not cost you 8k. There are options out there that you will sort through deer, kind of like shopping and others where you are searching for a once in a lifetime deer that you have a small chance of finding.

Once you narrow it down a bit I might be able to help you with expectations. Just be careful and don't rush to a decision.

I was about to state the same as LostinOregon, you should change your scoring from 180-200 based on your budget. 160 should be easily doable for less.

Ok, I did not want to look like an idiot asking for an unreasonable sized deer. I would prefer to hunt hard for 4-6 days and pass 170 class deer for the first 3 days while looking for an exceptional muley. So, I need a location that very commonly produces 170 class bucks.
Thanks to everyone, there has been lots of assistance already.

Don't worry about looking like an idiot on here! You would have no chance of standing out from the crowd!

With that budget I think you are in the 180+ category or- it is my belief- go twice for half of that $ if time is available to you. So much of getting a big one to make a mistake is weather/rut dependent going a couple years late in the year will increase your chances of the stars aligning in your favor. Of course really good private land is in your budget range and is almost as good as snow on the ground.

The kind of budget you have a 160" should be a last evening deer.

Call those unsuccessful references and ask how many and how big of bucks they did not shoot but could have.

My current situation precludes me from caring about your opinion but go ahead and give voice to it anyway...

LAST EDITED ON Dec-22-16 AT 12:17 PM (MST)

Just about any GS Utah rifle deer tag can get you a 160+ buck with a little effort. But considering what they want for a NR deer tag in this state, your probably better off to pay for a landowner tag somewhere

I'd look at Colorado myself. but if you don't find what you want there are a couple outfitters here in OR with huge amounts of well managed private land that should give you a shot at a 170+ buck and well within your price range.

I would say eastern plains of colorado also. Very big bucks there. No a typical mountain mule deer hunt.
