"Unit?"

I have 15 resident Utah deer points I'm not getting any younger and want to hunt a 180+ deer in 2017. Which unit y'all suggest? Of course my first choice is going to be Henry Mts Rifle but I want 100% draw so want y'all suggest paunsaugunt? Or?

I would go Paunsaugunt, but I grew up there and I know the area fairly well. 180 is doable but you will have to pass up a bunch of management bucks to get there.

Good luck.

Couple of issues here.
If you apply for Henry's 1st choice,
you wont have any chance at pulling a 2nd choice permit.
Zero LE deer permits make it to the '2nd'choice in Utah.

Secondly, 15 pts in the Paunsy rifle deer pool will
have about a 1 in 5 chance of drawing a 1st choice permit
in 2017.

The only LE rifle deer permits you would be gauranteed
with 15 points for 2017 are,
Book Cliffs, North or South
La Sal, Dolores Triangle
San Juan, Elk Ridge
South Slope, Diamond Mtn
Or, Vernon

I've been looking over Toprut.com

Lots of very good info there.

BUT,
the draw odds are from last year.
They do NOT take the point creep into consideration for 2017.

There is a disclaimer at the bottom of each page stating,
"<1> - Total Quota / Total Applicants - Should only be used as a relative indication of draw difficulty. See the Randow Draw Odds chart on the Unit detail page for true draw odds."

I'd bet there are a lot of guys looking at,
Total Quota / Total Applicants, and # going into X bonus point permits,
that will be disappointed. As they are, last years draw odds.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-26-16 AT 07:26 PM (MST)

Still pretty new to UT, but been reading up a lot on draw odds, tag #'s etc.

+1 to what Goofyelk said.

Everyone I talk to never draws 2nd choice LE tags, and there were 2 guys here where I work that are die hard Paunsy guys and there both had 16 points last year and didn't draw.

Plus my wifes friend had 18 last year and did not pull it.

IMO, still have a few years.

In my opinion, the only Utah unit that you could be guaranteed a 180" buck would be the Henrys. Most LE units will give you improved odds, but unless you scout/hunt hard and find luck, there are no big buck guarantees in Utah (and most states, for that matter).

I'd say if you want to burn your points, pick the LE unit that is closest to where you live, dedicate time to the scout and hunt. Then go have fun and don't look back, regardless of what you find.

Some of the best bucks I saw killed this year came from open units.

Right on, as usual.

180" bucks are usually tough to find even on great LE units. The seasons are SHORT so a healthy dose of skill and luck have to come into play.
Yes, 9 days is a very small window in time.
