I have been unable to find pictures of a Mule Deer's annual antler growth on live deer. There are many Whitetail sites with whitetail pics. Does anyone know of mule deer pics(the same deer year to year)
Yelum:
Thank you for your posts. Very helpful. We have trailcams up near large haybales in snow country. Lots of buck pics. The question will be : How to identify this cruel winter's survivors next summer and fall. Obviously we are noting individual characteristics-hide markings, antler characteristics and such. Will know more next fall.
Bayside, It made no sense to me either, but the guy said it was his biggest ever. Its only a 77-79 inch shed, and I offered sever sheds bigger,80-85 inches, or even some good cash but he said na. He want me to let go of the match, but I just didn't wannt to break up the collection.
Oldmulieman, you're welcome. I've got many more to post, that show a little change in characteristics in antlers, but facial markings and ears are key to recognizing bucks with or without antlers.
OMM it is difficult to document what you want to see for several reasons, most captive deer are WT, and those are the easiest to document/verify.
In most real world scenarios they can only stay lucky so long with thousands of nimrods out to nail them to the wall each fall. Once a buck gets "named" and is big enough to draw attention his days are numbered, if not by legal means then by illegal, post season means. Here anybody who gets above 190 tends to enter the field of fire.
Here is one who has dodged it all for awhile, one missing year somewhere in the middle.
Last year
here he is this year:
I'll dig up some more later, but in hard hunted country it is hard to get more than 3-4 years before death stops the record keeping... but it is amazing how in subsequent years a clone shows up, the king is dead long live the king...
My current situation precludes me from caring about your opinion but go ahead and give voice to it anyway...
LAST EDITED ON Jan-15-17 AT 08:10PM (MST)[p]Hey Yelum, here is a pic of a deer out on the island just two months ago. He's got to be related to thst 2014 pic from the buck on post #5.
This buck, and the buck in post #5, hung out together for 3-4 years. Its an island, so most likely same genetic pool. Heres 4 years of that buck you posted, no including this years.
