Colorado 5 pts?

Unlike most guys, I am not worried about getting 180"+ deer. Where would someone suggest using 5 pts for deer (non resident)?

Almost every unit in Colorado can make for a great hunt. I'm in the same boat, but I think I will just go for a point this year. Look over the Toprut.com link below and it will get you started down the right track. I would look at the amount of public land you have available to hunt for the points you have in your piggy bank.

I have actually fallen in love with that site. Been studying it almost obsessively for two months. Colorado "has to be" my "at least I have a decent tag" this year. I have some good ideas based off their data.

I drew nothing because I put in for hardly anything (points only). I will never let that happen again...

As others have said, Colorado has lots of great places to hunt for minimal points. A friend of mine shot a 200"+ net typical a couple of years ago on a unit that only required a couple of points to draw. I've hunted several units that require 2-3 points that have had lots of bucks to look over and, while I haven't shot a really big buck, I've had great hunts and felt like it was just a matter of being in the right place at the right time to find a really good buck.

It may be a good year to consider units that typically have less winter mortality given that the winter has started a bit heavier than usual.

Given that your expectations don't include a 180+ buck you really have lots and lots of options that will give you a fun hunt. Maybe pick a unit that takes 2-3 points so you can get to know it and hunt it again sooner rather than later.

PM me if you'd like a more detail on the places I've hunted.

I agree there are a lot of good units that hold some really nice deer that are just plain fun to hunt. A lot of 140-160 class deer.

Being an archery hunter mostly, I am also racking my brain on where to go. Obviously, I can pull some better units with fewer points as a bow hunter. I have been looking a lot at 74/75 and also at 44. Could either one of you guys happen to have any insight on which unit is better geared toward an early season, opening week bow hunter?

What is the muzzleloader season typically like in an "above average" unit? More specifically, is it a daylight or dark show and-or hiking your ass off all day to see bucks? I'm in good shape, but if I'm going to hike all day, I can do that with 0 points..

I have narrowed my search to these units...for what its worth.

I dont think i would have a pr9blem getting a buck. Some dont take 5 pts, so hopefully im not sorry. Thanks for the feedback i got. As well as pms.
