Henry Mountains Management Buck Hunt

I need your help. I'm in position to draw either the Henry's management buck hunt or the Book Cliffs this draw. I was planning to put in for the Henry's as it's been my dream to hunt these monster bucks. I've heard from folks it's possible to hunt the Henry's from your wheeler and there are plenty of nice management bucks to choose from. And recently others have said it's a two-day hike to reach a nice buck once you spot him and that there are limited "mature" management bucks. I know this community knows the truth, so I'm hoping you will help me.

Which hunt gives me the best chance at a 28"- 30" buck? The management hunt at the Henrys? Or should I settle for a 25" buck on the Books?

How many mature management bucks are on the Henry's? I've heard both - that there are several and also that there are mainly just young management bucks. I'd love to shoot a 30" 2x3.

I've read some MM posts related to this topic. But most threads get off subject regarding how these units should be managed. Which I do find to be an interesting topic...

If you've been on these LE hunts could you help me understand what I'd be getting into with either of these units?

I've never been to either unit. I'll scout the terrain this summer. And I'm planning to be out the entire hunt. I expect to get out and hunt; not just ride the wheeler all day. And I want the best chance at a 30" buck. Thanks for your help.

You would have to get pretty lucky to kill a 30" buck
in the Book cliffs.

I would rather have the Henry's management personally. I've been both places and that'd be my preference. How many points do you have?

I've never been on the Henries, but have been on the Books a fair amount. I don't think the Books are known for wide bucks like they are for crab claws. I rarely see a wide buck over 26". If you'd be happy with a pretty 25" 4 point then do the Books, otherwise it sounds like the Henries is the place for a wide gnarly one.

Hey tms, you can check out my Hunt Adventure Challenge thread titled "BR's Dream Season"...

I hunted the Book Cliffs last year with the Multi-Season tag. I probably saw more bucks than anybody last year while hunting... It'll give you a good sense of what to expect.

Frankly, My buck ended up being almost 27" wide. Not quite. I saw two other bucks during my hunts that I know would score a little better due to deep forks, but they were each only about 22" wide. I saw another 3x4 that would by a 27-28" buck, but I don't think he was 30". I don't think I saw a 30" buck out there this year. In fact, In all the years I've gone out there for fun and other hunts, I think I have only ever seen 1 buck that was a 30"er.

I know for sure of one buck that stretched the tape out to 31" from the Books this year. It had a nice cheater that got it there.

The real trouble with the Henry's Management tag is that many hunters with the regular tag see a 33" 3x4, and they don't pass. With good reason. So you are still competing with every tag on the mountain, luckily, there aren't that many of them.

As far as hunting from your wheeler, that is somewhat true. You CAN hunt from the road or two down there, but there's a lot of country that you don't get to experience. And you can find deer a long ways off, as was shared, and then you get to hike to them.

I think you are looking for a Henry's buck. I don't think you'd be happy with the Book Cliffs.

I've heard from the hunt expo this past weekend that every nice management buck is targeted by a guide. And that's it's nearly impossible to beat the guide and his hunters to a buck on the Henry's. Is this true?

Maybe if your road hunting.
The henry's are a very big area.

What is true is that it's hard for any weekend warrior to compete against the guiding companies some due to man hours spent on the mountain. They can find them and pattern them.

However, you don't need to beat the guide, just their client. ???
