CO advice

I am wondering if anyone has advice of CO units/hunts to research? I have 10 points and would like to hunt this fall in a unit with a good chance at a 170" deer. I have looked into a bunch of units but the more I research the more questions come up.

I know the winter is not looking good but am optimistic.
Thanks,
GWM

I assume you are a NR? That is important. But beyond that, you won't get much info with a post like this. Tell us a few units you are interested in with some questions about them, and you will prob get some intel.

Here is a good website to visit: http://www.toprut.com/

Click on Colorado, then mule deer and it will narrow your list down quite a bit.

There are 170" bucks in literally every unit in the state. With 10 points, you could have conceivably killed 5 of them already.

^^exactly how I feel, but since you have ten points you need to decide what season you are interested in then refer to toprut as suggested before to narrow it down. Then ask a question or two on here and I'm sure you'll get help. If I had that many points though id be looking at a high country rifle hunt if I could scout or a rut hunt if scouting wasn't possible. JMO

I wish i had 10 points for CO deer. Unlike a lot of states, that should get you a great hunt.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-06-17 AT 08:52AM (MST)[p]I have 11 as a resident and sitting in the same boat. I have no idea what to do!!

No offense, but if you have 10 or more points and have no clue what to do, that is kind of a joke. I would say it would be a good time to get serious, you have been diligent and saved up a good number of points, now go make the most of it. Any unit that takes 10+ points to draw will produce many 170+ bucks if that's what you are after. That being said nothing is a guarantee, but if you do your part a 170 should not be that tall of an order in Colorado. I would look hard at the early rifle hunts, the gunnison basin units, 21, 22, 30, 40, 42, 44, 49, 52, 61, 68, 75, really there are to many to list. Do some more in depth research, look at the draw odds, and put some time in on the ground. Having 10 points in your pocket is a pretty good spot to be. This has been beat like a dead horse, but every unit in the state can produce those kind of bucks, and most produce better. It really just boils down to you either getting a handout with some good info, or putting in some of your own time. I have found the latter to be more satisfying, and reliable. I wish I could tell you a unit that was crawling with 170's, but I can't. Most units you have to dig em out, but they are there. Early hunt or late hunt's make that job easier. Good luck, a 150 buck on your own is a hell of a lot more satisfying then a 180 buck that someone gave you the coordinates to?? JMO.

That's why I'm lost. I was saving up for 21 3rd season and it's not near what it used to be. I don't have enough for 44 3rd or 4th, and I've killed 170+ bucks for the last 6 years (minus 2014) on units that I got from the leftover list. I would like to go after something bigger and would think there would be something out there that would be worthy of 10+ points.

Sounds like we should be asking you where to go. I haven't done to much research on hunts that take that many points to draw, hopefully I can continue to find good areas with big buck potential for a few less points. I'm sure you will find a unit that suits your needs. Might have to do a 2nd season to get a tag, but the potential is there. Although If I was knocking down 170+ bucks every year, I would imagine there are some giants in that same unit, just a matter of turning them up. In the mean time I would keep banking my points for a premo tag.

Like everyone says, there's some in every unit if you work hard enough. If I could do the point banking, I would love 5 good hunts vs 1 great.
